CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR February 22, 2005
CALVIN SWIMMERS NAMED TO ALL-MIAA TEAMS
The men's and women's All-MIAA swimming and diving teams have been announced and nine Calvin swimmers have been so honored.
On the women's side, six Calvin swimmers have earned All-MIAA honors * matching the largest total in Calvin women's swimming and diving history. On the men's side, three Calvin swimmers have earned all-conference accolades.
The women's contingent is headlined once again by sophomore Rebekah Weima who has been named the MIAA's Most Valuable Swimmer for the second straight year. She is the second women's swimmer from Calvin to receive the award in back-to-back years with Katie Nagelkirk also receiving the award in 2002 and 2003. She is the third individual from Calvin to receive MIAA MVP honors during the 2004-05 academic year as David Haagsma was the league MVP in men's cross country and Joel Veldhouse in men's soccer this fall.
A native of Caledonia and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Weima has also been named to the All-MIAA team for the second straight year. She is joined on the All-MIAA team by junior Abby Johnson, sophomore Alex Wilson, and freshmen Stephanie Duncan, Kat Vinson and Megan Diekema,
Johnson is from Grand Haven and is a graduate of Grand Haven High School. She is making her third straight appearance on the All-MIAA team. Wilson is from Ellsworth, Ohio and is a graduate of Western Reserve High School. Like Weima, she is making her second straight appearance on the All-MIAA team.
Duncan is from Long Grove, Illinois and is a graduate of Adlai E. Stevenson High School. Vinson is from Kaneohe, Hawaii and is a graduate of Puhahou High School. Diekema is from Zeeland and is a graduate of Zeeland High School.
At the MIAA Championships held February 10-12 at the Holland Aquatic Center, Calvin captured its third MIAA title in the last five years as it posted a first place score of 562 points, 97 points ahead of runner-up Hope.
On the men's side, Calvin senior Peter Boumgarden, junior Luke Bagnall and sophomore Andrew Resseguie have been named to the All-MIAA team.
A native of Naperville, Illinois and a graduate of Naperville North High School, Boumgarden is making his fourth straight appearance on the All-MIAA team. Boumgarden is the seventh individual in Calvin men's swimming and diving history to receive the award four straight years as Mike Lubbers, Steve Ruiter, Charlie VanderPloeg, Mike VanderBaan, Robert Reehoorn and A.J. Penninga also achieved the feat.
Bagnall is a native of Marshalltown, Iowa. A graduate of Marshalltown High School, Bagnall is making his second straight appearance on the All-MIAA team. Resseguie is from Holland and is a graduate of Holland Christian High School. He is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA team.
At the MIAA Championships held February 10-12 at the Holland Aquatic Center, Calvin took fourth with a total of 333 points.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
For the fourth straight week, the Calvin men's basketball team is ranked in the D3hoops.com Top-25 poll. The Knights are ranked 17th in this week's poll, down two spots from a week ago.
The Knights (19-6) are scheduled to host Kalamazoo (7-17) Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. in a first round MIAA Tournament game at the Calvin Fieldhouse. The doors to the Calvin Fieldhouse will open Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. with tickets available at the door. Tickets will also be available at the Calvin Box Office Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Ticket prices are as follows:
* $2.00 for MIAA faculty/staff,
* FREE for MIAA students until 9:00am on Friday, after which they will be $2.00 while supplies last.
* $2.00 for non-MIAA college students, high school students, and children,
* $5.00 for General Admission.
* $7.00 for Reserved
Tickets must be paid by either cash or check.
