CALVIN BASKETBALL TEAMS RECORD HOMECOMING VICTORIES

MEN'S BASKETBALL

In front of a homecoming crowd of more than 3,400 fans, Calvin defeated Tri-State, 102-78, Saturday afternoon at the Calvin Fieldhouse. Calvin is now 35-5 in homecoming games at the Calvin Fieldhouse which opened in time for the 1965-66 season.

With the win, Calvin (19-6 overall, 11-3 MIAA) finishes second in the final MIAA regular season standings, one game behind league champion Albion (12-2 MIAA) and one game ahead of third place Hope (10-4 MIAA). The Knights will be the number-two seed for next week's MIAA Tournament and will host seventh-seeded Kalamazoo next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in a first round game

Senior Brad Sall [Hudsonville/Unity Christian] started the Knights off quickly, hitting a three-pointer only 10 seconds into the game. Three-pointers from Senior Ricky Shilts [Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Central], junior Joel Hoekstra [Hudsonville/Unity Christian] and Sall within the first six minutes of play gave the Knights a 22-9 lead. Calvin scored another 12 consecutive points to extend their lead. The Knights continued to extend their lead, leading by as many as 25. Calvin led at half-time, 65-43. In the second half, Tri-State narrowed Calvin's lead to 20 points, but the Knights continued to build up the score, reaching 100 points on a dunk from sophomore Josh Meckes [Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran].

"Overall, we did a very nice job. We had a very good game today," said head coach Kevin Vande Streek. "We were hoping to get the ball down to the posts and have success because they're not very big. We did a really nice job getting it in there."

Senior Dan Aultman [Ludington/Mason County Central] led the Knights in scoring with a game high 27 points and 10 rebounds. Hoekstra had his first career double-double with career scoring and rebounding highs with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Sall scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Meckes grabbed 10 rebounds and had a game high four blocks and game high three steals. Senior Kyle Trewhella [Rockford/Rockford] dished out a game high seven assists.

Tri-State was lead by Zach Lear with 18 points, and Micah Williams with 10 points. Brandon Appleton dished out a team high five assists and Aaron Rehrer grabbed a team high four rebounds.

Calvin shot 90% from the free throw line today, making 18 out of 20 shots from the line. Calvin held Tri-State to only 32.9% field goals, achieving one of their team goals.

"Shooting, we did a really nice job the first half, and we got kind of sloppy the second half," said Vande Streek. "We did a really nice job defensively."
Tri-State falls to 5-20, 2-12 in the MIAA.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

In front of a homecoming crowd of nearly 300 fans Saturday night, Calvin defeated Adrian, 68-44, Saturday night at the Calvin Fieldhouse
in the last conference game of the season.

With the victory, Calvin (19-4 overall, 13-3 MIAA) finishes third in the final MIAA regular season standings. The Knights also gain the number-three seed for next week's MIAA Tournament with Calvin hosting sixth-seeded St. Mary's in a first round MIAA Tournament game Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. Albion nipped Hope 63-62 Saturday to gain a share of the final MIAA regular season crown while also nabbing the top seed for the MIAA Tournament.

The first ten minutes of the Calvin's game with Adrian were an intense battle as the two clubs exchanged baskets and the lead. Calvin finally pulled away with a 12-0 run halfway through the first half, 25-13. Calvin expanded the lead to 17 points, 32-15 with 1:46 remaining in the first half. Adrian closed the half by bringing their deficit down to 14 points, 32-18.

In the second half, Adrian brought the score back to within 11, 34-23.
Freshman Lindsey Peuler [Grandville/Grandville] hit a three-pointer
that sparked a five-point run, and Calvin extended its lead, going ahead by as many as 24, 53-29 with eight minutes left. Calvin then maintained its double-digit lead lead the rest of the way to close the game, 68-44.

"We did a good job defensively," said head coach John Ross. "We're
starting to get our philosophy and principles down."

Peuler led the Knights in scoring with 11 points, senior Lesa Holleman
[Chandler, MN/SW Minnesota Christian], sophomore Lisa Winkle [Grand
Rapids/South Christian], and senior Lisa Nanninga [Grand Rapids/GR
Christian] all scored eight points. Nanninga also led the team with
seven rebounds and freshman Charis Larson [Grand Rapids/GR Christian] grabbed six rebounds. Senior Kristen McDonald [Grand Rapids/West Catholic] dished out six assists.

Adrian was led by Corri Helldobler with 10 points and Katie Psuate had a game-high nine rebounds.

"We've got to be more physical and aggressive for the games next week," said Ross. "This is everything we've wanted the whole year."

The Knights finished the regular season 19-4 and 13-3 in the MIAA.
Adrian finished 8-16, 4-12 in the MIAA.
