CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 18, 2005
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
ALLENDALE * The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams continued their indoor schedule Friday night at the Grand Rapids Championships hosted by Grand Valley State University.
Both Calvin teams turned in several standout performances.
In the women's competition, Calvin received a first place finish from senior Sue Abbring (Highland, IN) in the 200 meters (26.10) as well as second place performances from sophomore Katie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 400 meters (1:01.75) and junior Kim Vanderzee (Shoreline, WA) in the high jump (5-4). Junior Missy Smith (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also turned in a third place effort in the pole vault (11-7 ¾).
In the men's competition, Calvin senior Andy Yazzie (Rehoboth, NM) led a 1-2 Calvin finish in the 1,500 meters as he clocked in with a winning time of 4:18.62 while senior teammate Jeff Engbers was second in 4:19.16.
Junior Nate Meckes (Bay City) also cranked out a victory in the shot put with a winning throw of 56-8 ¾. Calvin also ran well in the sprints as freshman Kelby McClelland (Mercer, PA) won the 55 meter hurdles (7.93) and junior Chris Friebel (Shelby, OH) took second in the 55 meter dash (6.61).
Friday's competition marked the conclusion of Calvin's indoor scheduled. Both Calvin teams are scheduled to open their outdoor campaigns on March 12 at the Samford Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama.
