Lisa Winkle Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District IV Basketball Team

GRAND RAPIDS, MI * Calvin College sophomore Lisa Winkle has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV first team in women's basketball in the college division. As a member of the first team, Winkle now advances to the national ballot and is eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America consideration.

The college division includes schools at the NCAA II and III levels as well as NAIA institutions. District IV includes schools in the states of Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama.

The CoSIDA Academic All-District and All-America teams are selected by the College Sports Information Director's Association of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible for nomination, an individual must be a starter or a key reserve with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20. In addition, student-athletes must have completed one full academic year at their respective institutions.

Winkle is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of South Christian High School. A two-year starter at forward, Winkle is currently averaging 16.2 points and 8.1 rebounds a game while connecting on 61.0 percent of her field goal attempts. In a 49-45 victory over nationally-ranked Albion last night, Winkle had a huge ball game as she racked up her 10th collegiate double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds while also blocking four shots. Winkle scored the go-ahead basket with 49 seconds left to play that gave the Knights a 47-45 lead. Winkle then came up with a game-clinching steal with eight seconds left to play that prevented Albion from tying the game or taking the lead.

Winkle has notched double-digits in scoring in 41 of a possible 49 collegiate games. She also ranked among the nation's leaders in field goal percentage. In conference games, she currently leads the MIAA in rebounding (8.5) and blocked shots per game (2.27) and is second in the league in field goal percentage (.615) and third in scoring average (16.3).

In the classroom, Winkle carries a 3.94 grade point average while majoring in secondary education and mathematics. She was a member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll a year ago and is a three-time member of the Calvin Dean's List.

The Calvin women's basketball team is currently 18-4 overall and 12-3 in the MIAA which currently rests the Knights in third place in the league standings. Calvin is scheduled to host Adrian Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in front of a homecoming crowd. The Knights could still finish as high as second place in the league standings and also gain the number-two seed for next week's MIAA Tournament. Calvin is guaranteed of hosting a first round game next Tuesday night, February 22, at 7:30 p.m.
