CALVIN SPORTS REPORT * February 22, 2005
(Story written by Annalise Venhuizen '08)

In a first round game of the MIAA Tournament, the Calvin Knights (20-40, 14-3 MIAA) defeated the Belles of St. Mary's University (11-15, 6-11 MIAA), 78-42 at the Calvin Fieldhouse.

The victory allowed Calvin to reach the 20-win plateau for the second straight year and for the eighth time in school history. It marks the first time that the Knights have posted back-to-back 20-win campaigns since the 1999 and 2000 seasons.

A jumper by St. Mary's senior Emily Creachbaum started off the scoring in Tuesday night's game. Calvin quickly answered back as sophomore Lisa Winkle (Grand Rapids/ South Christian) made a lay-up. The scoring was back and forth for the first 13:50 seconds of the game, when the Knights were up one, 11-10.

As Calvin got a feel for the Belle's defense, however, the Knights began to pull away, going on a 6-0 streak. The Belles continued to double-team Winkle, leaving senior Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids/ Grand Rapids Christian) and then freshman Charis Larson (Grand Rapids/ Grand Rapids Christian) open for quick shots under the basket.

Calvin continued to widen the gap, leading the game at 30-14 with 4:00 left. The Belles ended the half with a burst, scoring 10 points to Calvin's 7 points. Calvin led 37-24 at halftime.

Senior Kristen McDonald (Grand Rapids/ West Catholic) started the second half with a layup, and the Knights never looked back. They continued their momentum, leading by 21 only four minutes in. The Knights would not allow the Belles to get within 21 points after the 7:31 mark. The Knights would lead by 36, and end the game 78-42.

Junior Bridget Boyce led St. Mary's scoring with 12 points, followed by senior sister Katie Boyce with 8 points.

For Calvin, McDonald had 20 points and 7 assists, one away from the single-season assist record. Lisa Winkle followed with 16 points and 8 rebounds, and freshman Wendy Zigterman (Western Springs, IL/ Timothy Christian) contributed 7 points in the second half.

The Knights now advance to the MIAA Tournament semifinals against Hope. The teams will play Thursday evening at the Dow Center in Holland, MI at 7:30 pm.
