CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 11, 2005
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
HOLLAND -- The Calvin women's swimming and diving team will head into the final
day of competition at the MIAA Championships with a 40-point lead over
defending champion Hope. After two days of competition, Calvin has a first
place team score of 363 points with Hope second at 323. Hope made up one point
on the Knights in Friday's competition as the Flying Dutch trailed Calvin by 41
points heading into Friday's preliminaries.
Sophomore Becky Weima of Grand Rapids Christian High School played a pivotal
role in helping the Knights maintain a hold on first place as she successfully
defended her MIAA title in the 200 freestyle as she clocked in with a blazing
time of 1:50.57. Weima's time is the fastest time in NCAA III women's swimming
this year and is also a new MIAA and Calvin record as well as an NCAA III
automatic qualifying time. Weima had held the previous MIAA and Calvin
records in the 200 freestyle. Weima has now captured four individual MIAA
titles in her career.
In addition, Weima joined up with freshmen Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL)
and Megan Diekema (Zeeland HS) and junior Abby Johnson (Grand Haven HS) to win
the 800 freestyle relay with a school record, MIAA record and NCAA III
automatic qualifying time of 7:41.58. The time is the best performance in the
nation this year and also lopped nearly seven seconds off the previous school
mark.
Johnson also had a big evening, winning the 400 IM with an NCAA III conditional
qualifying time of 4:38.67, allowing her to win the event for the second time
in three years. Her time was just five-hundreths of a second ahead of
runner-up Meagan O'Neil of Hope. Johnson has now won five individual MIAA
titles in her career.
The 400 IM proved to be a big point producer for the Calvin women as the four
of the top six spots with sophomore Alex Wilson (Ellsworth, OH) taking third
with an NCAA III conditional qualifying tie of 4:40.66, junior Lynn Visser
(Jenison HS) taking fourth in 4:54.42 and sophomore Barbara Frazier
(Placerville, CA) taking sixth in 4:58.34.
Weima was one of two Calvin swimmers in the top six in the 200 freestyle as
Diekema took fifth in 1:59.41. Calvin added two in the top six in the 100
backstroke as freshman Kat Vinson (Kaneohe, HI) was fourth with a season-best
time of 1:01.76 with sophomore Liz Ingebrigtsen (Bensenville, IL) fifth with a
season-best time of 1:02.62.
In the 100 breaststroke, Calvin freshman Sarah Abbott (East Grand Rapids HS)
splashed her way to a fourth place finish in a season-best time of 1:10.13. In
addition, junior Laura Miersma (Holland Christian HS) won the consolation heat
with a seventh place time of 1:10.17. Duncan also won the consolation heat in
the 100 butterfly with a seventh place time of 1:02.40. Calvin's 200 medley
relay added a third place time of 1:53.11.
"We obviously had some great swims from Becky and Abby tonight in their
individual events and our 800 freestyle relay team was tremendous," said
Gelderloos. "I knew that our relay team had that kind of potential. It was
just a matter of whether we would pop a big time and we did. I couldn't be any
happier."
Gelderloss also cited that much work is still to be done. "Our goal is to win
a conference title and we're not there yet by any means," he said. "Hope is
performing very well and if we want to win, we'll have to earn it. The thing I
keep telling our team is that every race and every place counts. Depth is so
important in a meet like this and so far, we have received contributions from
individuals across the board. We'll need to keep that up tomorrow morning and
tomorrow night."

MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
HOLLAND -- After two days of competition, Calvin remains in fifth place at the
MIAA Championships but the Knights have also inched closer to fourth place.
Calvin holds fifth place with a team score of 232 points with Albion just five
points ahead of the Knights in fourth place while Olivet is third (272.5),
Kalamazoo second (284) and Hope first (328).
Calvin picked up three victories on Friday night with senior Peter Boumgarden
(Naperville, IL) leading the way as he captured the MIAA's 100 butterfly title
for the fourth straight year, becoming just the second four-time 100 butterfly
champion in MIAA men's swimming history with Brett Robbins of Kalamazoo also
achieving the feat from 1995-to-1998. Boumgarden is also just the third
individual in Calvin men's swim history to win an event four consecutive years
at the MIAA Championships as Mike Lubbers was a four-time champion in the 100
backstroke from 1993-to-1996 and Steve Ruiter a four-time champion in the 400
IM from 1983-to-1986.
Boumgarden took first place in the 100 butterfly Friday night with an NCAA III
automatic qualifying time of 49.87 which currently ranks as the second fastest
time in the nation this year. It is also the second fastest of Boumgarden's
career, surpassed only by his school record time of 49.25 that allowed him to
take national runner-up honors in 2002.
Boumgarden's victory was sweetened by the performance of younger brother John
Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) who took third in the event on Friday with a
season-best time of 52.05.
The two Boumgardens also teamed up to lead Calvin to a victory in the 200
medley relay. Calvin's 200 medley relay also consisted of junior Luke Bagnall
(Marshalltown, IA) and sophomore Andrew Resseguie (Holland Christian HS) with
its winning time of 1:34.92 good for an NCAA III conditional qualifying
performance. Calvin's 800 freestyle relay team of sophomore Peter Tuuk (Grand
Rapids Christian HS), Bagnall, Resseguie and Peter Boumgarden also took first
place with a time of 6:59.47. It marks the fourth time in the last five years
that Calvin has captured the MIAA 800 freestyle relay crown.
Bagnall also had a fine individual performance in taking second in the 400 IM
with a season-best time of 4:14.35 with freshman Joe Gluvers (Rocklin, CA)
taking fifth with a time of 4:22.12.
Calvin also received a runner-up swim from Tuuk as he churned his way to a
second place and career-best time of 1:44.36 in the 200 freestyle with
Resseguie not far behind in fourth place with a time of 1:46.60.
"I was pleased with the way we swam tonight," said Gelderloos. "We really had
a great evening going last night until our (400 medley) relay DQ in the last
race of the night. We could have hung our heads about that but I didn't see
any signs of it today. We swam with energy and enthusiasm and I think we have
a chance to do some good things tomorrow."
