CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 10, 2005

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
(Story written by Colin McWhertor and Abby Zylstra)

HOLLAND- Thursday was the first night of the three day MIAA swimming and diving
Championships at the Holland Aquatic Center.

On the women's side, Calvin College leads at the end of the first night with
183 points, Hope is in second place with 142 points, and Kalamazoo is in third
with 116 points.

The Calvin women placed first in numerous events Thursday. In the 200 yard
freestyle relay, the team of sophomore Becky Weima(GR Christian), freshman
Stephanie Duncan(Long Grave, IL), sophomore Liz Ingebrigsten(Bensenville, IL),
and freshman Kat Vinson(Kaneohe, HI) won with a season-best time of 1:36.93,
which is a provisional qualifying time for nationals was just over a tenth of a
second off a school record mark.

Weima also won the 500 yard freestyle with a MIAA meet record and NCAA III
automatic qualifying time of 5:00.94. The first place finish marks the third
individual league crown of Weima's career. Weima's victory was part of a
powerful one-two Calvi finish as freshman Megan Diekema (Zeeland) placed second
in that race with a season-best time of 5:13.61. Calvin also picked up a
seventh place swim in the event from Duncan who clocked in at 5:18.51.

Coach Dan Gelderloos was pleased with Weima's showing after she had been ill
earlier in the day. "It was a gutsy swim; I was very impressed with how she
handled everything today."

Calvin swimmers also had a strong showing in 200 yard individual medley, as
junior Abby Johnson(Grand Haven) placed first with a time of 2:09.71, and
sophomore Alex Wilson(Ellsworth, OH) placed second at 2:12.51. Johnson's time
was good enough for an NCAA provisional qualifier. It also marked her second
league title in the event in the last three years.

Vinson also had a strong sprint performance as she placed second in the 50 yard
freestyle with a season-best and NCAA III conditional qualifying time of 24.46.

In addition, Calvin took home the last relay of the night when Johnson, Wilson,
Weima, and Vinson combined for a time of 3:58.77 in the 400 yard medley relay,
which is an NCAA provisional qualifying time and a new Calvin school record.
The previous school record had been 4:02/28 established earlier this year.

In diving, Calvin placed three divers in the top six on the three-meter board.
Senior Anna Battoclette(Cincinnati, OH) was third with a score of 385.70, Julie
Erickson was fourth (367.60), and freshman Lis Beal (GR Christian) sixth
(299.15).

Gelderloos was happy with the overall performance of the women's team saying,
"It went very, very well. It was a very good show and I could not have
asked for better performances from our team tonight."
