MEN'S BASKETBALL

The Calvin men's basketball team is back in a share of first place in the MIAA
standings with Albion (9-2 MIAA, 17-5 overall) after defeating Olivet (3-8
MIAA, 9-13 overall)
84-56, Wednesday night at the Calvin Fieldhouse.

Calvin jumped out to a 12-5 lead and held its margin for most of the
half. Olivet brought it back to within one, 24-23, with six minutes
left in the half. Olivet went on to take the lead 27-26 with two
minutes left in the half. Calvin fought back and gained a three point
lead, 30-27, to close the half.

Calvin and Olivet exchanged baskets at the start of the second half.
With 10 minutes in the half the score was 50-42, Calvin's lead. Calvin
started what would turn out to be a 23-1 run, including three
three-pointers, two by junior Andy Draayer [Denver/Denver Christian],
bringing the score to 73-43. Calvin increased their lead to 32 points
with 1:42 left in the game, 84-52. Calvin won the game, 84-56.

"We played pretty well defensively," said head coach Kevin VandeStreek.
"We picked up our shooting in the second half."

Draayer led the Knights and the game with 25 points, including seven
three-pointers. In the second half, the Denver native connected on all six of
his three-point attempts as well as all seven of his field goal attempts.
Senior Dan Aultman [Ludington/Mason County Central] scored 18 points and game
high eight rebounds, senior Brad Sall[Hudsonville/Unity Christian] grabbed a
game high three steals, and
junior Joel Hoekstra [Hudsonville/Unity Christian] dished out a game
high four assists.

"It started with our defense," said Draayer. "We did a good job
tonight
moving the ball and finding the open guy."

For Olivet, Derek Kurtz and Ronnie Pearson each scored 10 points.

The Knights return to action Saturday, February 12, at 3:00 p.m. against
Alma.
