CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2005

MEN'S BASKETBALL

KALAMAZOO- Calvin moved back into first place Saturday with a 97-83 victory
over Kalamazoo. The Knights victory, combined with Albion College's loss to
Hope College by a score of 68-59, ties Calvin with Albion for first place.
Albion holds the tie-breaker advantage of head-to-head match-ups over Calvin.

Coming of a heartbreaking overtime loss Wednesday night at Albion, Calvin
looked sluggish for much of the game on Saturday. The Knights had the shooting
touch from behind the three point line early as senior Brad Sall(Unity
Christian), junior Joel Hoekstra(Unity Christian), and senior Ricky
Shilts(Kalamazoo Central) all connecting from downtown in the first five
minutes of the game.

Both teams struggled defensively as Calvin led 49-39 at the half. Coach Kevin
VandeStreek was not happy with the defensive performance his team put forth.

"We were not interested in playing on the defensive side today. We got the
win, but unfortunately I wanted our best effort, which we didn't have."
VandeStreek also said that he was surprised at his team's effort. "This
team has been so consistent all year, so we are not used to this."

In the 2nd half, Calvin appeared ready to pull away from the Hornets when Sall
had baskets at both ends of another Shilts three-pointer to up Calvin's lead
to 19 at 76-57 with 11:30 left. Kalamazoo would answer right away by going on
an 11-0 run to bring the score to 76-68 before junior Andy Draayer(Denver, CO)
ended the Knights drought by nailing a shot from outside the arc.

Calvin was able to hold off the Hornets the rest of the way, which coach
VandeStreek was pleased about. "We managed the clock very well at the end,
which is important when you are having a poor day defensively. We didn't
commit the costly turnovers that can really hurt you."

All five starters were in double figures for Calvin. Shilts scored a team
high 20 points, while senior Dan Aultman(Mason County Central) and Sall had 18
apiece, which is a new career high for Sall. Aultman also collected nine
boards. Sophomore Josh Meckes(Saginaw Valley Lutheran) had 12 points with nine
rebounds and Hoekstra finished with 10. Other scoring for Calvin included
senior Josh Vriesman(Denver, CO) with eight points, Draayer with six, and
junior Brian Roelofs(Haverford, PA) with four.

The Knights are back in action on Wednesday evening when they take on the
Olivet Comets at the Calvin Fieldhouse. Game time is 7:30pm.
