CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 2, 2005
MEN'S BASKETBALL
An epic contest between two nationally-ranked teams ended in overtime defeat
for Calvin Wednesday evening as the Knights were nipped 78-76 in overtime at
Albion's Kresge Gymnasium.
Ranked fifth in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll, Albion (18-1 overall, 8-1
MIAA) moves into sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings with the
Knights falling a game behind while Hope (6-3 MIAA) moved within a game of
Calvin and remained two games behind Albion. Hope is scheduled to travel to
Albion on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
Ranked 18th in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll and third in the first set
of Great Lakes Regional rankings released this afternoon, Calvin trailed 35-29
at halftime and then slipped behind by 19 points in the second half as the
Britons built a 61-42 lead with 9:33 remaining.
Calvin (15-5 overall, 7-2 MIAA) refused to throw in the towel however as it
ripped off a 15-1 scoring run over the next six minutes to draw to within five
at 62-57 with 3:05 left. Albion would then go back up by eight points twice,
using a three-pointer by Mike Bailey to take a 65-57 lead and a jumper by Mike
Thomas to take a 67-59 lead with 1:51 left.
But there was still plenty of fight left in the Knights as senior Dan Aultman
nailed a jumper with 1:01 left on the clock to bring the Knights within six at
67-61 and after a missed Albion free throw, Calvin senior Ricky Shilts raced
down and converted a three-point play to cut the gap to three at 67-64. Albion
sophomore Zak Silas would then hit three free throws to put the Britons up
70-64 with 16 seconds left but Shilts answered with a deep three-pointer to
make it 70-67. After the Shilts triple, Calvin called its final timeout and
received a break when Albion threw the ball out of bounds near mid-court with
two seconds left. An initial pass by Calvin was tipped out of bounds, eating
up another second on the clock, giving Calvin one last chance.
The Knights made good on that last chance as Aultman received a pass from
sophomore Kyle Snoeyink just past midcourt, turned and heaved up a 35-foot
prayer that swished through the net, sending the game into overtime at 70-70.
Calvin then held the early momentum in overtime as Shilts ripped in a triple
in the first five seconds with Aultman connecting on a jumper a
minute-and-a-half later to give the Knights a 75-71 lead. With Calvin leading
75-73, Shilts attempted another three-pointer that did everything but drop
through the hoop, with Albion grabbing the rebound.
Ranked first in the Great Lakes Region, Albion would then tie the game at 76
on a jumper in the paint by DePree with 1:21 remaining and after a Calvin
turnover, the Britons would get a chance to play for the win. An initial shot
attempt by Albion was off the mark but Albion's Garrett Gibbons would grab
the offensive rebound. The carom would prove to be golden for Albion as Thomas
would hit a 12-foot pull-up jumper with nine seconds left to put the Britons up
78-76. Calvin would have a chance to tie but a shot in the lane was off the
mark, allowing the Britons to pull out the win.
The victory was Albion's second of the year against Calvin and also snapped
the six-game win streak of the Knights.
The performance also brought mixed emotions to Calvin head coach Kevin Vande
Streek. "First of all I'm very proud of the way our guys battled back but
I'm also very disappointed in the way we played in the first 10 minutes of
the second half," he said. "We were scared and tentative and did not play
well with the pressure. Once we fell behind by double-digits, we lost that
pressure and we played much more relaxed."
Calvin was led in defeat by Shilts and Aultman with Shilts scoring 20
including 15 in the second half while Aultman had 18 points and seven boards
with 11 of his points coming in the second half. Junior Brian Roelofs also had
nine points off the bench with junior Joel Hoekstra and sophomore Josh Meckes
adding seven points apiece.
Calvin shot 39.4 percent overall including just 33.3 percent in the second
half but the Knights also held Albion to just 41 percent shooting overall
including just 33.3 percent in the second half.
Albion placed five players in double-digits in scoring with DePree leading the
way with 15 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, four blocks and four steals.
"He's a great player," said Vande Streek. "He's one of the best
if not the best player in our league."
Thomas and Silas were next with 13 points apiece while junior Mike Bailey and
sophomore Lonny Fulse had 10 points apiece.
Albion held a 44-40 rebounding edge and also outscored the Knights by nine
points at the free throw line with the Britons 21 of 31 (.677) at the stripe
while Calvin was 12 of 15 (.800) at the line.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it journeys to Kalamazoo for a game
scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Anderson Athletic Center.
