CALVIN SPORTS REPORT (PART TWO) FOR JANUARY 15, 2005
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
DETROIT * The Calvin women's swimming and diving team pulled off an impressive 126-117 victory at Division II Wayne State University Saturday afternoon while the Calvin men fought hard before falling to the host Tarters 111-93 in the men's dual meet.
The Calvin women are now 6-2 in dual meet action this year while the Calvin men are 2-6.
In the women's competition, Calvin freshman Megan Diekema (Zeeland HS) had a breakout performance. Slowed by injury during the first semester, Diekema opened the second half of the season in fine form, winning the 1,650 freestyle (18:43.58) and 500 freestyle (5:26.06) with season-best performances.
Sophomore Becky Weima (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was also a double-winner as she took first place in the 50 freestyle (24.24) and 100 butterfly (1:00.49). Her time in the 50 freestyle was a season-best and an NCAA III conditional qualifying time. Weima led a 1-2-3 Calvin sweep in the 50 freestyle as freshman Kat Vinson (Kaneohe, HI) was second (25.56) and sophomore Liz Ingebrigtsen (Bensenville, IL) third (25.94).
Other individual winners for the Calvin women included freshman Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL) in the 100 freestyle (55.59) and junior Abby Johnson (Grand Haven HS) in the 400 IM (4:42.80). Duncan led a 1-2 Calvin finish in the 100 freestyle as Ingebrigtsen took second (57.00). Johnson led a 1-2 finish in the 400 IM as sophomore Alex Wilson (Canfield, OH) took second in the 400 IM (4:49.22). Wilson also led a 2-3-4 Calvin finish in the 100 breaststroke as she took second place with a season-best time of 1:11.23 with junior Laura Miersma (Holland Christian HS) making her season-debut with a third-place time of 1:11.54 and freshman Sarah Abbott (East Grand Rapids HS) taking fourth in 1:13.72.
Calvin also received a 2-3 performance from Johnson and Vinson in the 100 backstroke with Johnson taking second in a season-best time of 1:03.15, finishing three-hundreths of a second out of first place and Vinson placing third in 1:04.91.
Calvin's 800 freestyle relay team of Johnson, Diekema, junior Lynn Visser (Jenison HS) and Weima also clocked in with a first place time of 8:07.40.
In the men's competition, Calvin's 200 medley relay team of senior Peter Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) freshman Lucas Seebeck (Grand Rapids Christian HS), freshman John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) and junior Luke Bagnall led off the meet with a first place time of 1:39.05.
Sophomore Andrew Resseguie (Holland Christian HS) also had a big afternoon for Calvin, winning the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 22.35 and taking second in the 100 freestyle in 49.13. Peter Boumgarden took second in the 50 freestyle (22.38) and in the 100 butterfly (52.03). Calvin also received a first place swim from Seebeck in the 100 breaststroke as he clocked in with a time of 1:02.75.
Bagnall also turned in a fine effort in taking place in the 400 IM with a time of 4:23.09. In addition, sophomore Peter Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) took second in the 200 freestyle (1:48.71) with John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) taking third (1:50.41). John Boumgarden grabbed Calvin's final first place performance of the meet with a season-best time of 48.82 in the 100 freestyle.
Both Calvin teams return to action next Friday when they host Grand Valley State University in non-conference dual meets slated to start at 6:00 p.m. at Calvin's Bergsma Natatorium.
