CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 9, 2004

ALL-MIAA VOLLEYBALL TEAMS ANNOUNCED

The All-MIAA volleyball teams have been announced and three individuals from Calvin have been named to the All-MIAA first team while one has been named to the second team.

Named to the All-MIAA first team from Calvin are seniors Kara Kuipers and Kristin DeGroot and freshman Katie Zondervan.

Named to the All-MIAA second team from Calvin is junior Christine Hendricks.

In addition, DeGroot has been named the MIAA's Defensive Player of the Year while Zondervan has been voted the MIAA's Freshman of the Year.

Kuipers is from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Unity Christian High School. She is making her second straight appearance on the All-MIAA first team. Kuipers led the MIAA for the second straight year in blocks-per-game average and is ranked among the nation's leaders once again in that category. A two-time MIAA Player of the Week this fall, Kuipers is currently averaging 3.75 kills and 1.54 blocks-per-game along with an attack percentage of .319.

DeGroot and Zondervan are both Southern California natives are both are making their first appearance on the All-MIAA first team. DeGroot is from Tulare, California, and is a graduate of Central Valley Christian High School. Zondervan is from Lakewood, California. She is a graduate of Valley Christian High School.

A libero, DeGroot has been among the MIAA's leaders this year in digs-per-game. She is currently averaging 5.02 digs-per-game and was recently named MIAA Specialty Player of the Week.

A setter, Zondervan has made a big impact this fall for Calvin, averaging 13.57 assists-per-game which ranks among the top 10 nationally in assists-per-game average. In addition, Zondervan was named MIAA Specialty Player of the Week twice this fall.

Hendricks hails from Cincinnati, Ohio. She is a graduate of Turpin High School. A middle-hitter, Hendricks has a team-leading .354 attack percentage and is averaging 3.39 kills and 0.78 blocks-per-game.

Also receiving honorable mention recognition from the MIAA coaches is sophomore Kristen Kalb. Kalb is from Stow, Ohio. She is a graduate of Munroe Falls High School.

Calvin is currently 27-8 overall and will face 17-11 Nebraska Wesleyan in a first round NCAA III Tournament match Thursday afternoon in Pella, Iowa. Thursday's match at Central College will start at 4:30 p.m. locally (CT). Calvin is making its 14th NCAA III Tournament appearance. The Knights gained an NCAA III Tournament bid by winning the MIAA Tournament last weekend. Calvin finished second in the MIAA regular season standings with a 14-2 conference record.

MORE VOLLEYBALL * CALVIN PLAYERS RECEIVE MIAA POW ACCOLADES

A pair of Calvin College volleyball players have received weekly honors from the MIAA as junior Katie Schultz has been named MIAA Player of the Week while junior Kristin DeGroot has been named MIAA Specialty Player of the Week.

Both individuals are from Southern California. Schultz is from Escondido and DeGroot is from Tulare. Schultz is a graduate of Escondido Calvin Christian High School and DeGroot a graduate of Central Valley Christian High School.

Both players played key roles in leading Calvin to a three-match MIAA Tournament run that concluded with a four-game upset of nationally-ranked Alma in Saturday's MIAA Tournament Championship final.

The tournament title was the third for Calvin in six tournament appearances including its first since 2001.

In the MIAA Tournament Championship final against Alma, Schultz had 15 kills and a team-high 20 digs. DeGroot was close behind with 19 service aces from her libero position.

Over the course of Calvin's three-match MIAA Tournament run, Schultz compiled an attack percentage of .296, a kills-per-game average of 2.80, a digs-per-game average of 5.0 and a blocks-per-game average of 0.30. DeGroot was credited with 51 digs and five service aces during the week for an average of 5.10 digs and 0.50 service aces-per-game.

MEN'S SOCCER

For the second time this year and for the third time in his career, Calvin sweeper back Peter Malefyt has been named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week. A native of Lansing and a graduate of Lansing Christian High School, Malefyt keyed a Calvin defense that gained shutout victories over Tri-State (5-0 and Hope (1-0) last week as the Knights gained their first outright MIAA title since 1987.

Ranked eighth in the latest national poll, Calvin (18-1-1 overall) allowed just one goal in 14 league games this fall, setting a new MIAA single-season record, breaking the previous mark of three goals allowed by Kalamazoo 2001 team.

Malefyt has been a part of 16 shutout victories for Calvin this fall which is also a new Calvin single-season record.

Calvin is currently ranked third nationally in team goals-against-average (0.32).
With its victory over Hope Saturday, Calvin gained its first NCAA III Tournament bid since 1991.

The Knights received a first round bye and will host a second round game on Saturday against he winner of a Wednesday first round game between Wartburg (IA) 17-1-2 and Dominican University (IL) 15-3-3. A starting time for Saturday's second round game has not yet been announced.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING

Calvin College junior Abby Johnson of Grand Haven High School established a new school record in the 200 breaststroke with her second place time of 2:25.92 in a dual meet with Wheaton and Grand Valley State Saturday afternoon. The time by Johnson was also an NCAA III B' cut qualifying time and broke the previous Calvin record of 2:28.56 established by Anne Kuiper in 2000.

The Calvin women's swimming and diving team is scheduled to return to action this Saturday when it competes in a quadrangular held at the University of Michigan. The quadrangular will also include teams from Kalamazoo, Case Western Reserve and Denison.
