Calvin picked up two more wins to its record after defeating Tri-State and
Olivet in a MIAA triangular on Saturday. Calvin remains in second place in
the MIAA with a 13-1 conference record 13-1, one victory behind league-leading
Alma.
With the pair of victories, Calvin (20-7 overall) also reached the 20-win
plateau for the 10th straight year.
In Saturday's opener, the Knights tripped up the Tri-State Thunder 30-15,
30-17,30-24. Senior Kara
Kuipers [Hudsonville, Mich.] and Kristen Kalb [Stow, Ohio] both put
down thirteen kills. Freshman Katie Zondervan [Lakewood, Cal.] set 32
assists. Kalb dug out ten kill attempts and senior Kristin DeGroot
[Tulare, Cal.] dug out eight. Kuipers also led with two solo blocks
and five block assists.
Calvin then swept the Olivet Comets 30-15, 30-12, 30-15. Kuipers led the
Knights in kills again,
putting down 12 kills and Kalb followed with 11.
Zondervan dished out 37 serves. DeGroot dug out 12 digs and junior
Katie Schultz [Escondido, Cal.] followed with 11. Kuipers blocked
three kill attempts.
"It was good," said head coach Amber Warners. "I think we're
starting
to peak. We're coming out and playing at our level no matter who we
play."
The Knights return to action Tuesday, Oct. 26 at Adrian in a match scheduled
to begin at 7:00 p.m. The Knights
play at home on Friday, October 29 against Alma. The match will begin at 2:00
p.m. - a change from the original start time of 4:30 p.m. The Calvin/Alma
match will also serve as a first round match of the Midwest Invite.
MEN'S SOCCER
ALMA - Another sterling defensive performance propelled Calvin to its 12th
shutout victory of the year as the Knights blanked Alma 3-0 Saturday afternoon
at rain-swept Scotland Yard.
Senior Joel Vande Kopple (Grand Rapids Christian HS) scored a pair of first
half goals in staking the Knights to a 2-0 halftime lead with junior David
Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS) adding an insurance marker midway through
the second half.
VandeKopple now has six goals on the year while Holwerda has seven. All seven
of Holwerda's goals have come off the bench.
Senior Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) picked up two assists on the afternoon
while freshman A.J. Dufendach (Forest Hills Northern HS) was also credited with
one assist.
Calvin held a 17-12 shots at goal advantage with goalkeepers Joe Westra (Grand
Rapids Christian HS) and Dave Fortosis (Wheaton, IL) combining on the shutout
for the Knights with Westra collecting two saves and Fortosis six saves.
Westra held down the fort through the first 45 minutes with Fortosis playing
the final 45.
Ranked 14th nationally, Calvin is now 14-1-1 overall and remains three points
behind league-leading Hope in the conference standings as the Knights are 9-1-0
in league play while the Flying Dutchmen are 10-0-0.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Kalamazoo at 4:00 p.m. in a
key conference match. The game will be broadcast via RealAudio through the
