CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 20, 2004
MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin opened a rugged stretch of conference games with a 3-0 victory at
upset-minded Albion Wednesday afternoon.
Ranked 14th in the latest Division III Top-25 poll, Calvin improves to 13-1-1
overall and remains three points behind league-leading Hope as the Knights are
now 8-1-0 in league play while Hope is 9-0-0.
Sophomore David Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS) provided a spark off the
bench in Wednesday's victory at Albion with a pair of goals including the
game-winner in the 35th minute of play when he connected off a long lead pass
from junior Peter Malefyt (Lansing Christian HS).
Senior Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) followed with his team-leading 15th
goal of the year with just 3:28 left in the first half, curling in a direct
kick from 25 yards out.
Holwerda provided insurance with a goal in the 77th minute of play with junior
Matt Cosnek (Hopewell, PA) drawing an assist on the play. The goal was the
sixth of the year for Holwerda.
Calvin finished the game with a 13-8 shots at goal advantage but the host
Britons (6-7-1 overall, 4-4-0 MIAA) were able to put only one shot on goal.
Junior Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Dave Fortosis
(Wheaton, IL) combined on the shutout in nets for the Knights with Fortosis
collecting the lone save of the afternoon for Calvin.
Westra has now been a part of 22 shutout victories in his collegiate career.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it journeys to Alma for a game slated
to start at 1:30 p.m. at Alma's Scotland Yard.
