CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 19, 2004
WOMEN'S SOCCER
(Story written by Abby Zylstra '08)
Calvin's eight-game unbeaten streak came to end with a sudden-death loss to
at the Buys Athletic Complex Tuesday night. The Flying Dutch scored
the winning goal with 1:09 left in the first overtime to win the game,
3-2.
Hope now gains the edge for first place in the MIAA standings with a record of
8-1-2, and Calvin falls to 9-2-1 in league play and having played one more
conference game than Hope. A Hope victory on Saturday at Tri-State would allow
the Flying Dutch to move ahead of Calvin by a single point in the conference
standings.
Hope took an early lead in the game. Freshman Sarah Cochrane scored a goal at
the 33:34 minute mark, as she broke free in the Calvin box after a receiving a
pass from freshman Elise Tresslar, Cochrane had a shot from about 15 feet that
found the back of the net to give Hope a 1-0 lead it would take into halftime.
Hope continue the attacked early in the second half as Tresslar had an
unassisted
goal at the 32:06 minute mark off a direct free kick to make the score 2-0.
Calvin made a comeback at the 28:02 minute mark with its first goal of the
game. Sophomore Jill Capel [Hudsonville, Mich.] beat a defender, and with Hope
s goalkeeper out of the box to challenge the rush, Capel slid a pass to
sophomore Sarah Weesies [Kalamazoo, Mich.] who deposited a shot into the left
hand corner of the net for her 12th goal of the year.
The Knights continued the intensity and at the 25:07 minute mark, Capel
scored her team-leading 18th goal of the season on a header over the keeper
with senior Linnea Butler [Shelton, Wash.) drawing an assist on the play.
The game was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation, so the teams went into the
first of two potential sudden death 10-minute overtime sessions. Calvin had a
pair of shots in the overtime but could not connect. With time ticking down in
the first overtime, Hope then struck quickly on a counterattack.
Hope s junior Leah DeWitt [Holland, Mich.] beat the defense up the right wing
on the play and Tresslar buried the ball into the net from the center of the
box in the 99th minute of play to win the game, 3-2.
Calvin took 10 shots and Hope had 14 during the game. Goalkeeper junior
Linda Heilman [Byron Center, Mich.] blocked 11 shots and Nestle blocked
17. The Knights had 11 fouls and the Flying Dutch committed 21.
Calvin took four corner kicks and Hope took nine.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday, October 27, when they host Tri-State
at 4:00 p.m.
