CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 25, 2004
MEN'S SOCCER
For the second time this year, Calvin College junior goalkeeper Joe Westra has
been named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week in men's soccer.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School,
Westra helped post back-to-back shutout victories last week as the Knights
topped Albion 3-0 and Alma by the same 3-0 score.
Westra went the first 62 minutes in the win over Albion and the first 45
minutes in the win over Alma.
This fall, the Calvin men's soccer team has posted 12 shutout victories - a
new Calvin single-season record with Westra playing a role in all 12 shutouts.
Westra has 45 saves on the year and a sparkling goals-against-average of 0.42
that ranks him 10th nationally among NCAA III goalkeepers.
Calvin is currently 14-1-1 overall and in second place in the MIAA standings
with a 9-1-0 conference mark. The Knights are ranked 14th nationally with the
next set of Division III Top-25 rankings due out Tuesday afternoon.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it plays host to the Hornets of
Kalamazoo at 4:00 p.m. On Saturday, the Knights will journey to Olivet for a
1:30 p.m. match.
