VOLLEYBALL
Elmhurst, IL * The first day of the Elmhurst Volleyball Invitational pitted Calvin against tenth ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater University in the first round of pool play, and against North Park University in the second round. Calvin (16-6) was unable to upend Wisconsin-Whitewater and lost the match 30-25, 30-24, 30-21, but coming back strong, the Knights defeated North Park 30-25, 32-34, 30-24, 30-14 to go to 1-1 and stand in second place in Pool B.
After reseeding by Day 1 records, the Knights stay in Pool B where they will first face Concordia University (ILL.) and later battle Wisconsin-Platteville to round out the invitational.
The Elmhurst Volleyball Invitational is no stranger to strong competition this year, boasting four of its nine teams ranked in the top 20 in the latest AVCA polls. Included in the ranked teams are Wittenberg (#2), Wisconsin-Whitewater (#10), Wisconsin-Platteville (#11), and invitational host Elmhurst (#20).
The MIAA is representing itself with a team beginning in each of the three pools. Olivet College ended the day with a 0-2 record to move to Pool C, where Hope College, also 0-2 on the day, remains. Hope and Olivet will play each other in the first round of Day 2 action.
