CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2004

WOMEN'S SOCCER

ANGOLA, IN -- A tight MIAA women's soccer race just got a little tighter. With
a thrilling 3-2 victory at Tri-State Wednesday afternoon, Calvin moved into a
three-way tie for first place in the MIAA standings with Hope and St. Mary's at
4-1-1 in the league standings. The Knights were aided by St. Mary's which
handed Hope a 2-0 defeat on Wednesday to help create the three-team logjam atop
the standings.

It also sets up a showdown for first place on Saturday as Calvin will host St.
Mary's at noon in a key conference match. With its victory over Tri-State
Wednesday, Calvin (5-4-1 overall) moved above the .500 mark for the first time
in the 2004 season.

Tri-State (1-6-1 overall, 0-6-1 MIAA) entered Wednesday's match with Calvin
looking for its first conference victory of the year and the host Thunder
nearly did just that as it held a 2-1 lead on the strength of a goal by
freshman Jackie Havenaar just 15 seconds into the second half.

Calvin sophomore Jill Capel (Unity Christian HS) then stepped up and delivered
a pair of clutch second half goals to allow the Knights to escape with the win.
Capel scored her first goal with 27:30 remaining on an assist from sophomore
Leah Scholten (Unity Christian HS). The play began on a Scholten corner kick
with Capel moving in front and heading the ball into the back of the net. With
just 4:08 left in regulation, Capel scored again as she collected a serve from
senior Linnea Butler (Shelton, WA) and smashed in a shot from in close to give
the Knights their first lead of the game.

The lead would hold as the Knights would pick up just their third road victory
of the year. Tri-State opened the scoring with a goal by Nichole Stringham
4:41 into the match before Calvin countered with a goal by junior Kara Zuidema
(Escondido, CA). The Zuidema goal was set up by a through-ball pass by Capel.

Havenaar then stunned the Knights with her quick goal just seconds into the
final 45-minute session, forcing Calvin to rally.

Calvin finished with a 40-5 shots at goal advantage but Tri-State goalkeepers
Krystal Park and Sherry Clark were able to combine for 14 saves. Calvin junior
goaltender Linda Heilman (South Christian HS) would pick up two saves in
gaining her fifth victory of the year in nets.

Saturday's game with St. Mary's will be broadcast via RealAudio through the
Calvin web site at: www.Calvin.edu/sports. The game will be part of a soccer
doubleheader over the Calvin web site as the men's soccer game at Kalamazoo
will be picked up in progress (via RealAudio) upon completion of the women's
game with St. Mary's. The men's game at Kalamazoo is scheduled to begin at
1:30 p.m.

A team score of 373 was good for a third place tie at the Aquinas College
Invitational Wednesday afternon at the Scott Lake Golf Club for the Calvin
women's golf team. Calvin finished in a tie for third place with Bethel (IN)
with host Aquinas second at 366 and Olivet first at 334. There were also a
handful of teams competing at Wednesday's outing that did not post a team score
for not having the minimum four golfers needed for an official team score.

that was good for third place individually on Wednesday. She was followed by
junior Annie Huizenga (Unity Christian HS) with a score of 90 while sophomore
Abby Stemler (Elk River, MN) had a 97 and sophomore Megan Andrews (Midland) a
score of 105.
