CALVIN SPORTS REPORT PART THREE FOR SEPTEMBER 25, 2004

VOLLEYBALL

SPRINGFIELD, OH - Calvin split a pair of matches at the Wittenberg Invitational on Saturday to finish the two-day tournament with a 1-3 record. Calvin (11-5 overall) opened Saturday with a 30-21, 27-30, 30-21, 30-27 loss to Baldwin-Wallace College before rebounding to defeat Case Western Reserve 30-25, 30-17, 30-17.

In the loss to Baldwin-Wallace, Calvin was led by senior Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian HS) who tallied 12 kills and five blocks. Sophomore Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) added 11 kills, 14 digs and three service aces with freshman setter Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA) tossing out 42 assists. Senior Kristin DeGroot (Tulare, CA) also picked up 22 digs from her libero slot.

In the win over Case Western Reserve, Calvin was led by Kalb with 15 kills and a hitting percentage of .500. Sophomore Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA) also had a big match with 12 kills while sophomore Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) had 10 kills. Zondervan added 45 assists, four aces and six digs while DeGroot had 20 digs.

For her efforts over the weekend, DeGroot was named to the all-tournament team.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday night when it hosts Adrian at 7:00 p.m. in a conference match. The match will be broadcast via RealAudio through the Calvin web site at: www.Calvin.edu/sports

MEN'S GOLF

ALMA -- A fifth place finish at the fifth MIAA Tournament of the year dropped Calvin into fifth place in the overall team standings. The Knights sit a lone stroke behind Albion in the overall team standings. Calvin posted a team score of 316 at Saturday's outing hosted by Alma at the Pine River Country Club while Albion took fourth with a score of 308.

Sophomore Jeff TenBrink (Kalamazoo Christian HS) led the Knights with a round of 74 that was good for a tie for seventh place individually. Senior Mike Bratt (Lynden, WA) was Calvin's next-best finisher with a round of 78 while junior Nick Bolt (New Berlin, WI) and sophomore Jake Wolffis (Western Michigan Christian HS) had rounds of 82. Calvin's next finisher was sophomore Tim VanVugt (Brookfield, WI) with an 86.

Joel Bickel of Tri-State earned medalist honors on Saturday with a round of 71. Hope took first place honors at Saturday's outing with a team score of 292 with Tri-State second at 293.

Calvin returns to action on Monday when it competes at an outing hosted by Hope at the Wuskowhan Golf Club.

WOMEN'S GOLF

ANGOLA, IN * Another strong consistent performance has allowed the Knights of Calvin to move into sixth place in the MIAA's overall team standings.

At an MIAA outing hosted by Tri-State Saturday at its Zollner Golf Course, Calvin took sixth with a team score of 356 strokes, allowing the Knights to move into sixth place in the overall team standings, three strokes ahead of Hope. The Knights are nine strokes behind fifth place Alma.

St. Mary's took first at Saturday's outing with a score of 321 with the Belles widening their lead for first place in the overall standings to nearly 50 strokes.

Calvin was paced by junior Annie Huizenga (Unity Christian HS) who fired a round of 85 to six-way tie for sixth place individually. Senior Dawn Svenkeson (Scandia, MN) and junior Margaret Tassaro (Carnegie, PA) were close behind with rounds of 87 while sophomore Abby Stemler (Elk River, MN) had a 97 and sophomore Megan Andrews (Midland) a 104.

Lisa Greg of Albion was Saturday's medalist with a round of 80.

Just 36 holes of golf remain in the MIAA golf season with the final league competition set for Oct. 8 & 9 at the MIAA Championships, scheduled to be held at the Bedford Valley Country Club in Marshall. The final 36 holes will count in the final cumulative team and individual standings.

Calvin will now prepare for a pair of non-conference outings. On Wednesday, Calvin will compete in a non-conference outing against Aquinas at the Scott Lake Golf Club. On Thursday, Calvin will compete against Hope in a non-conference outing with the Knights hosting at the Thornapple Pointe Golf Club.
