Grand Rapids * The eighth-ranked Calvin College Knights (8-0-1, 3-0 MIAA) defended their home turf with a 2-0 shutout victory over the Albion College Britons (3-4-1, 1-1 MIAA) this afternoon. Calvin used an early goal in the first half and another in the second to solidify the victory.
Just under ten minutes into the match, Calvin's sophomore midfielder Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian) hit a shot on the ground to the far post to put the Knights up 1-0. Assisting on the Capisciolto goal were Levi Kool (Holland Christian) and Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls Christian).
At nearly the same point in the second half, Veldhouse ripped a shot from about 25 yards out to give the Knights a 2-0 lead. Albion had chances in the second half to cut into the Knights lead, but Calvin's defense turned away the Britons' offensive attack just in time.
Albion took six shots in the game, only one of which made it on net where Calvin goaltender Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian) made the save. The Knights blasted thirteen shots, nine of which made it on goal.
Westra picked up his sixth shutout victory of the year in the win including the 17th of his collegiate career.
With Saturday's victory, Calvin currently holds a 14-game unbeaten streak at Calvin Field dating back to last year.
Calvin will again defend their home field this Tuesday when they host Alma, another team near the top of the MIAA, at 4:00 p.m.
