MEN'S SOCCER
Grand Rapids * Another narrow victory kept the Knights undefeated as they edged Wabash College 1-0 Saturday afternoon on the second day of competition of the Dr. Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament. With the victory, Calvin gained a share of the final tournament title along with Otterbein as Otterbein edged Hope 1-0 in Saturday's other second round game. It marks the second straight year Calvin has captured the tournament title. Calvin (4-0-1) has had each of its four victories this year come by a margin of just one goal, outscoring its opponents 8-4 on the season.
Calvin's goal came in the 13th minute of the first half; starting with the goalkeeper Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian). Westra booted the ball over the half line and on one hop it went over the defense of Wabash to the feet of Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian). Capisciolto turned with the ball, took two touches, and blasted the ball just under the crossbar and over the keeper's hands. The assist for Westra was the first of his collegiate career.
Westra made five saves in his third shutout of the season and 15th of his collegiate career. Calvin finished with a 21-8 shots at goal advantage. Calvin also had eleven corner kicks to Wabash's one.
Calvin will travel to Ohio Northern this Tuesday to continue its non-conference schedule.
