MEN'S SOCCER
Grand Rapids * A second half letdown made a 2-0 Calvin lead vanish quickly in Calvin's first game of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament where the Knights tied Otterbein College 2-2. With the tie, Calvin stayed undefeated on the season at 3-0-1 and stretched its home unbeaten streak to 12 games.
First-half scoring started in the 12th minute when Calvin senior Joel VandeKopple (Grand Rapids Christian) headed a cross from the foot of Matt Cosnek (Hopewell) to the far side of the goal and in. The Knights would carry the lead into halftime with an 8-2 shot advantage over the Cardinals.
The Knights gave themselves a two-goal lead in the 57th minute as sophomore Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian) pushed a pass from Levi Kool (Holland Christian) just to the left of the Cardinal goalkeeper and into the back of the net. The Cardinals answered in the 71st minute to cut the lead to one, and again just 1 minute and 12 seconds later with a header to tie the game at 2-2.
Goaltending was the key for each team as junior Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian) made a couple of miraculous saves to keep the ball out of the net while Jeff Rust blocked shot after shot for the Cardinals.
The Knights will take the field tomorrow for their second game of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament at 2:00 p.m. to face Wabash College. In Friday's other first round contest of the tournament, Hope was a 5-1 winner over Wabash.
