CALVIN SPORTS REPORT for Wednesday, September 8, 2004

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Grand Rapids * Calvin experienced victory for the first time in the 2004 season when it defeated MIAA opponent Kalamazoo College 2-1 Wednesday afternoon. Calvin moved to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in MIAA action, while Kalamazoo fell to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the MIAA.

Calvin opened scoring in the first half when Kate Otten (Sheboygan County Christian, WI) sent a long ball on net that found some tricky wind and put it just over the keeper's hands. The freshman's first collegiate goal came unassisted in the 34th minute. The score would stand at 1-0 until half-time, Calvin having a 14-1 shot advantage at that mark.

Kalamazoo rallied early in the second half, getting many shots off quickly, and scored in the 62nd minute when Elizabeth Hauslein knocked one in to knot the game at 1-1. Kalamazoo continued to pepper Calvin goaltender Linda Heilman (South Christian) until the 80th minute when Calvin broke out of its own zone and finally made something happen. Junior Noell Berghuis (Unity Christian) intercepted a Hornet pass and led sophomore Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian) behind Kalamazoo's defense. Weesies took care of the rest as she slid the ball past the Kalamazoo goalkeeper to give the Knights a 2-1 lead. Calvin's defense held strong on the support of sophomore Tricia DeVries (Grand Rapids Christian) for the final ten minutes to secure the victory.

Heilman made four saves in her 90 minutes of action, all of them coming in the second half.

Calvin returns to action this Saturday when it travels to Alma College for an MIAA matc slated to start at noon.

VOLLEYBALL

OLIVET * Calvin stretched its win streak to five with a 30-17, 30-12, 30-12 victory at Olivet Wednesday night in the MIAA opener for the Knights. Calvin (5-1 overall, 1-0 MIAA) collected 11 service aces in the three-game win and compiled an impressive team hitting percentage of .336.

Seniors Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian HS) and Kristin DeGroot (Tulare, CA) led the offensive attack with 10 kills apiece. Kuipers also tallied eight block assists. Freshman setter Katie Zondervan (Cerritos, CA) also continued her strong play with 37 assists, four block assists and two service aces. Zondervan was one of five Calvin players to notch two service aces in the Wednesday night win.

Calvin returns to action on Friday when it competes at St. Mary's in a conference triangular. Calvin will meet both Tri-State and St. Mary's on Friday in conference matches.
