MEN'S GOLF
Olivet * Calvin dropped a couple positions by shooting a day two score of 317 to finish the Olivet College Comet Classic in 14th place with a team score of 628. Calvin was led by senior Matt Kelly (Western Michigan Christian) who shot a day one 77 and day two 75 for a total of 152, good enough for a 17th place tie individually. Also scoring for the Knights were sophomore Jeff TenBrink (Kalamazoo Christian) who shot a 79 yesterday and a 74 today to total 153 strokes and finished tied for 23rd overall. Senior Mike Bratt shot a 75 and 85 for a weekend total of 160, while sophomore Jake Wolffis shot an 80 and an 83 to finish the weekend with a 163. Calvin will travel to Albion College this Wednesday to play at the Medalist.
MEN'S SOCCER
Alma * Calvin stayed undefeated this season by downing Siena Heights 1-0 in the final day of the Alma Scotland Yard Classic. The Knights moved to 2-0 overall with both of their wins coming by one goal. Sophomore David Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian) scored the only goal of the match in the 54th minute on an assist from junior Levi Kool (Holland Christian). The Knights dominated the shooting 14-7, with junior Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian) having to make saves on six of the seven shots taken by Siena.
Calvin is back in action this Tuesday when they play host to cross-town rival Cornerstone University at 4:00 p.m.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Bloomington, IL * Calvin fell to 0-3 on the season after losing to Illinois Wesleyan 2-0 in the second day of the Illinois Wesleyan Titan Classic. The Titans dominated the shooting 13-5, but Calvin goalkeeper Linda Heilman made save after save to keep the Knights in the game until the 86th minute when Illinois Wesleyan scored their second goal to finish off the Knights. Heilman, a junior from South Christian High School, finished with eleven saves.
Illinois Wesleyan scored their first goal in the 23rd minute, but play stayed close and Calvin drew the crossbar before the Titans could put it away.
VOLLEYBALL
Colorado Springs, CO * Calvin opened day two of the Colorado College Tournament by giving host Colorado College their first taste of defeat in the tournament in three straight games, 30-27, 30-18, and 30-22. Senior Kristin DeGroot (Central Valley Christian) led the Knight's offense with 12 kills and helped on defense with ten digs and took part in six blocks. Junior Katie Schultz (Escondido Calvin Christian) led Calvin with 15 digs. Senior Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian) added ten kills and three service aces. Freshman Katie Zondervan (Valley Christian) had 38 assists in the victory.
In the Colorado College Tournament Championship, Calvin again faced Colorado College and again beat them in three straight games, 30-26, 30-21, and 30-28, to go to 4-1 on the season. Kuipers led the team with 12 kills and three aces, while Hendricks killed 11 attempts and sophomore Kristen Kalb (Stow Munroe Falls) accumulated ten kills. Kalb also led the defense with 15 digs along with 12 digs from Schultz. Zondervan had 41 assists
The Knights went 12-1 in games through the four match tournament, their only loss coming to North Central College. Kuipers earned tournament MVP and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Hendricks and Zondervan.
Calvin will travel to St. Mary's College on Friday for a tri-match with St. Mary's and Tri-State University.
