Calvin College Wins 2004 Pikes Peak Challenge
Knights Dig Out Pair of Wins Against Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Calvin College swept a pair of matches with
host Colorado College on Saturday to win the 2004 Pikes Peak Challenge
with a perfect 4-0 record. The Knights used an efficient offense and a
frustrating defense to beat the Tigers 30-26, 30-21, 30-28 in the
championship match after taking the first meeting 30-27, 30-18, 30-22.
Calvin College improved to 4-1 overall, while Colorado College dropped to
2-3.

Both matches were nearly identical, with the two teams matching points
throughout the first and third games. The difference was Calvin College's
ability to keep balls in play, which ultimately frustrated CC's hitters
and led to unforced errors on key points. In the championship match alone,
the Tigers had 24 unforced hitting errors and six errors on their serve.
The more efficient Knights hit .213 as a team, compared .076 for the
Tigers.

The Knights were led by tournament MVP Kara Kuipers, who had a team-high
12 kills and four blocks in the tournament finale. Junior middle hitter
Christine Hendricks had 11 kills and earned a spot on the all-tournament
team, while sophomore outside hitter Kristen Kalb tallied a double-double
with 10 kills and a team-best 15 digs.

Colorado College was led by its two members of the all-tournament team,
senior right side hitter Katheraine Hauschka and junior middle hitter
Tania Morosan. Hauschka had a match-high 14 kills and Morosan reached
double figures with 12. Senior libero Aubrey Reed had a match-high 18
digs, while junior outside hitter Kristina Rogers finished with 14.

Senior outside hitter Kristin DeGroot had a double-double with 12 kills
and 10 digs to lead the Knights to their first victory over the Tigers.
Kuipers and Hendricks added 10 kills apiece, while junior libero Katie
Schuldt had a match-high 15 digs. Hauscka had a match-high 14 kills for
CC.

In the third-place match, Rhodes College rallied from a two-game deficit
to post a 28-30, 24-20, 30-24, 30-17, 15-10 victory over North Central
College. Senior middle hitter Kathryne Giovannini had a match-high 20
kills to lead the Lynx, who had five players finish with double-figure
kills. Junior libero had a match-high 24 digs, while junior right side
hitter Michelle Petter turned in a double-double with 12 kills and 16
digs.

The Tigers will be back in action next weekend when they play host to the
Colorado College Invitational on Sept. 10-11 at Reid Gymnasium. CC will
face McMurry University and Cal State Hayward on Friday, then George Fox
University and Lewis & Clark College on Saturday. The five matches will
begin each day at 10 a.m..
