MEN'S SOCCER

Alma * Calvin kicked off its 2004 season in the Alma Scotland Yard Classic with a victory over Heidelberg, 3-2. The nailbiting play lasted through two overtimes before junior Matt Cosnek (Hopewell, PA) scored to end the match.

Scoring opened in the second half's 54th minute when Cosnek scored off an assist from sophomore Nate Kooi (Lynden Christian) and continued just three minutes later when junior Kurt Visker (Grand Rapids Christian) scored off a pass from junior Levi Kool (Holland Christian). Heidelberg tied the game in the next fifteen minutes to send the game to overtime. Cosnek sealed the deal with just 3:32 remaining in the second overtime.

Calvin blasted 13 shots, while Heidelberg shot 10 times. Calvin's goalkeeper, junior Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian), made fives saves in the victory.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Bloomington, IL * Calvin fell to 0-2 in a narrow defeat to Wisconsin-Osh Kosh in their opening game of the Illinois Wesleyan Titan Classic. The 2-1 overtime loss marks the second time in two games that Calvin has relinquished an early lead.

Sophomore Jill Capel (Unity Christian) continued her trend of scoring the first goal in a game in the 12th minute when she scored Calvin's only goal unassisted.

Oshkosh scored the game-tying goal in the 62nd minute of play and late in the first overtime scored on a penalty kick awarded because of a Calvin handball in the goal box.

Calvin fired 10 shots to Oshkosh's 16. Junior Goaltender Linda Heilman (South Christian) made 14 saves in the defeat.

VOLLEYBALL

Colorado Springs, CO * Calvin gained their first victory of the young 2004 season when it defeated Rhodes College in the opening match of the Pikes Peak Challenge 30-24, 30-23, 30-25. Senior middle-hitter Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian) hit .480 in the opening match, committing only one error on 25 attacks. Junior Christine Hendricks (Turpin, OH) added nine kills for the Knights.

Calvin later defeated North Central College 30-18, 30-26, 24-30, 30-15 to go to 2-0 on the day and stay undefeated with Colorado College for the weekend. Kuipers accumulated 18 kills in the victory, while hard-hitting sophomore Kristen Kalb (Stow Munroe Falls) added 16 kills in the victory.
