CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY, September 1, 2004
WOMEN'S SOCCER
It took less than two minutes for Calvin to score its first goal of the season but the early score would be all the Knights could muster in a season-opening 3-1 loss to visiting Madonna University Wednesday afternoon at Calvin Field.
Calvin sophomore Jill Capel (Unity Christian HS) gave the Knights a 1-0 lead just 1:26 into Wednesday's match as she ripped in a left-footed shot off a long service pass from senior Linnea Butler (Shelton, WA).
The 2003 WHAC Tournament champion, Madonna began to turn the momentum however with lengthy ball possession and then hit pay dirt in the 20th minute on a goal by Liz Slebodnik.
Slebodnik struck again six minutes into the second half with a solid rip from 15 yards out that tucked just inside the cross bar to put the Crusaders up 2-1. Madonna's Kelly Japowicz provided the clinching goal with just 4:31 left in regulation after the Knights had mounted a handful of solid scoring opportunities in a bid to tie the score.
Madonna finished the game with a 20-8 shots at goal advantage including 14-3 in the second half. Sophomore Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian HS) had four of Calvin's eight shots at goal including a pair of shots on goal. Junior Linda Heilman (South Christian HS) picked up four saves in her first collegiate start including a leaping stab in the second half that prevent a sure goal by Japowicz. Diana Kaip also had four saves for Madonna.
Calvin returns to action on Friday at 7:00 p.m, (EDT) when it takes on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in a first round match of a tournament hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois.
