MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD

DECATUR, IL * The Calvin College track and field teams turned in a memorable day as the Knights advanced to the finals in every trial they attempted and also crowned three All-Americans. Sophomore Missy Smith (Grand Rapids Christian) earned All-American status in the pole vault, Matt Edwards (Grand Blanc) in the 10,000 meter run, and David Haagsma (Grand Rapids Christian) also in the 10,000 meter.

*Christine Hendricks * Heptathlon * With four of the seven events in the books Calvin sophomore Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) is in good position to repeat as an All-American in the heptathlon. She is currently in seventh place out of a field of 18 athletes with a point total of 2,674. Hendricks began the day by taking eighth place in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.78 she then was ninth in the high jump clearing a height of 4'11.75. In the shot put competition Hendricks placed first unleashing a throw of 39'8.5. She finished the day by placing 18th in the 200 meter dash. Friday she will finish the Heptathlon by competing in the javelin, long jump, and 800 meter dash. She netted 741 points in the 100 meter hurdles, 644 points in the high jump, 668 points in the shot put, and 621 points in the 200 meter dash.

*Sue Abbring * 200 Meter Trials * Junior Sue Abbring (Highland, IN/Illiana Christian) advanced to the 200 meter finals with a heat-best time of 24.70. Abbring had the second-best time of the day just behind Amber James of Wheaton College (Ma) who notched a time of 24.63. She will run again on Saturday, May 29 at 3:55 p.m. in the finals. Abbring owns the school record in the 200 meters with a time of 24.46.

*Laura Hamilton * 400 Hurdle Trials * Junior Laura Hamilton (Downers Grove, IL/Timothy Christian) etched her name in the Calvin record books on Thursday afternoon after running to a 1:01.02 time in the 400 meter hurdles. It was her best time of the season by nearly half a second and broke the previous school record of 1:01.04 set by Jennifer Rottschafer in 1997. Hamilton's time was a the heat winner and the second best of the day as Jessica Trombly from Tufts University recorded a 1:00.99 time. Hamilton advances to the finals which will be 3:35 p.m. on Saturday, May 29.

*Missy Smith * Pole Vault Finals * Sophomore Missy Smith (Grand Rapids Christian) solidified herself as an All-American by finishing fourth in the pole vault. She jumped to a height of 11'8.5". Smith was part of a 1-2-4 finish for the MIAA as Amanda Hanies of Adrian College finished first and Jen VanderMeer of Hope placed second.

Calvin head coach Jong-Il Kim wasn't surprised by Smith's finish. "Missy has worked very hard and she deserves this honor."

*Jeff Engbers * 1500 Meter Trials * Senior Jeff Engbers (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian) posted a time of 3:54.93 and advanced to the 1500 meter finals. He finished sixth in his heat and pulled down the 11th spot of the 12-man field. The finals are 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 29. The best time of the day was posted by Matt Winkler of Williams College with a time of 3:52.42.

*Hamilton, Abbring, Lisa Winkle, Meredith Homer * 400 Meter Relay Trials * The Calvin 400 meter relay team of junior Laura Hamilton (Downers Grove, IL/Timothy Christian), junior Sue Abbring (Highland, IN/Illiana Christian), freshman Lisa Winkle (South Christian), and freshman Meredith Homer (Charlton, MA/Whitinsville Christian) notched the fasted time of the day and also recorded a season-best time of 47.57. They bested their previous season-best time of 47.87 and advance to the finals on Saturday, May 29 at 1:30 p.m. The NCAA III record in the 400 meter relay is 46.20 set in 1998.

*Winkle, Hamilton, Abbring, Katie VanderLaan * 1600 Meter Relay Trials * The Calvin 1600 meter relay team of Lisa Winkle, Laura Hamilton, Sue Abbring, and Katie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian) ran to a season-best time of 3:47.29. It was the second fastest time of the day as the Knight relay advances to the finals on May, 29 at 5:05 p.m. It bested the previous season-best time of 3:48.69 while the school record is 3:43.24 set in 2000.

*Matt Edwards, David Haagsma, Tim Avery, Kris Koster * 10,000 Meter Finals * Calvin seniors David Haagsma (Grand Rapids Christian) and Matt Edwards (Grand Blanc/Grand Blanc) battled through the humidity and earned All-American status in the 10,000 meter run. Edwards' time of 30:54.32 placed him fifth overall as he ran in the front pack for most of the race as Haagsma battled back to take eighth place with a time of 31:19.71. Senior Tim Avery (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) finished 13th with a time of 32:27.51 while senior Kris Koster (Grand Rapids Christian) did not finish.

Brian Diemer, one of Calvin's distance coaches, was pleased with his runner's efforts. "We had great hopes for this race, we thought we had a chance for four All-Americans," he said. "But it just shows the caliber of great distance runners that are gathered here. I am so proud of our guys¯they ran with a lot of heart."
