CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FRIDAY, MAY 28, 2004

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD

Part I

DECATUR, IL * With day two of competition not completed the Calvin women's track and field team has already racked up three All-American performances. Taking home All-American hardware are Katie Corner (Catholic Central) in the discus, Kim Vanderzee (Shoreline, WA/Shorewood) in the high jump, and Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids Christian) in the high jump. This is part one of two as this report cover the heptathlon, women's discus, women's high jump, and women's long jump. Later this evening a report concerning men's discus, men's and women's steeplechase, and the women's 100 meter dash trials will be sent out. The current team scores are listed at the bottom of the report as the Calvin women are in second and the Calvin men are in 13th place. Updated scores and places will be included in Part II of the Calvin Sports Report.

*Christine Hendricks, Heptathlon * A year after gaining All-American status in the heptathlon sophomore Christine Hendricks came up just a bit short in her bid to repeat this year. Hendricks finished in ninth place, just 13 points behind the eighth spot and All-American status. She competed in the long jump, javelin throw, and 800 meter run. In the long jump she went 16'8.75", finishing in fourth place and garnering 587 points. She finished ninth in the javelin throw with a throw of 113'0". Going into the last event of the heptathlon Hendricks was in sixth place, but an 18th place finish in the 800 meter run was too much to overcome as she recorded a time of 2:33.01

*Katie Corner, Discus * For the third straight year Calvin senior Katie Corner (Catholic Central) is an All-American in the discus. She finished second in conditions that were not ideal for throwing, but still managed a throw of 156-3 (47.63m).Corner also finished in second place last year and fifth place in 2002. She placed second in her flight and was inches away from taking first place as her final throw was just foul. The winning distance was 159-6 (48.62m) thrown by Kristin Petersen of Gustavus Adolphus.

Calvin throwing coach Norm Zylstra said the conditions allowed anyone to win. "Katie threw as well as she could considering the conditions. The slow ring and tailwind made it a pretty tough day to throw. Overall, it's not ever about just one meet and it shouldn't be. It is about the relationships that you make and the people you get to know."

*Kim Vanderzee, Lauren Colyn, Katie Bolt, High Jump * Sophomore Kim Vanderzee (Shoreline, WA/Shorewood) and freshman Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids Christian) earned All-American status in the high jump by placing second and sixth, respectively. Vanderzee cleared 5'5.75" and finished in a four-way tie for second place. She entered the competition seeded fourth with a height of 5'7". Bolt also cleared 5'5.75", but took one more attempt than Vanderzee did and finished in a two-way tie for second place. It was a great ending for Bolt who qualified for nationals in a meet just last weekend. Freshman Lauren Colyn (Kalamazoo Christian) finished 14th overall, clearing 5'3.75".

Calvin head coach Jong-Il Kim was very pleased with a two All-American performance in the high jump. "Kim has been very consistent all year and she showed her consistency today. She really worked hard during the off-season and her condition was a big factor in becoming an All-American today."

"Katie's All-American performance is a big bonus for us as a team," Kim said. "She had the ability and she put it all together at the right point in the season."

*Josh Meckes, Long Jump *Calvin freshman Josh Meckes (Bay City/Lutheran Westland) did not advance to the finals in the long jump. He finished the day with a long-jump of 22'7.75". His longest jump of the year was 23'2.5" going into the national meet.
