MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

DECATUR, IL - For the third straight year, Calvin track and field coach Dr.
Jong-Il Kim has been named the NCAA III Great Lakes Region Women's Track and
Field Coach of the Year by the United States Track and Field Coaches
Association (USTCA). Kim was so honored Wednesday night at the USTCA Division
III banquet on the campus of Millikin University - site of the 2004 NCAA III
Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

In addition, Calvin junior Sue Abbring of Highland, Indiana was named NCAA III
Great Lakes Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

The regional coach of the year honor is the fifth for Kim as he has also
received regional coach of the year honors twice in men's track and field.

In receiving her award Wednesday night, Abbring becomes the third Calvin track
and field athlete in the last four years to be so honored as Nate Meckes was
named Great Lakes Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 2003 while
Megan Pierce was named Great Lakes Women's Track and Field Athlete of the
Year in 2001.

Abbring is the top seed in the 200 meters for the NCAA III Championships this
weekend with a time of 24.38 that she posted last Friday night at a meet hosted
by North Central College. A graduate of Illiana Christian High School, Abbring
is also seeded sixth in the 100 meters (.12.08) and is the anchor leg on
Calvin's 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter relay teams. Calvin's 4x100 meter
relay team is seeded eighth (47.87) while its 4x400 meter relay team is seeded
number-one (3:48.69).

The NCAA III Championships begin tomorrow morning. Scheduled to compete for
Calvin are sophomore Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) in the heptathlon and
seniors Matt Edwards (Grand Blanc HS), Dave Haagsma (South Christian HS), Kris
Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Tim Avery (Rochester, NY) in the finals
of the men's 10,000 meters. Edwards is the top seed (29:49) in the men's
10K. Calvin sophomore Miss Smith (Grand Rapids Christian HS) will also compete
in the women's pole vault Thursday.

A large contingent of Calvin athletes are also scheduled to compete in
preliminaries on Thursday including Abbring in the 100 and 200 meters as well
as in both relays.
