CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR TUESDAY, MAY 25, 2004
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
When the NCAA III Track and Field Championships roll around this weekend, the Calvin Men's and Women's Track & Field teams will be well represented. The Knights qualified 23 athletes for the three-day event (May 27-29) hosted by Millikin University, located in Decatur, Illinois. Fourteen women and nine men will compete in 17 events.
The Calvin women, who finished sixth in 2003, have two individuals and one relay seeded first in the nation. Senior Katie Corner (Grand Rapids/Catholic Central) is seeded first in the discus while junior Sue Abbring (Highland, IN/Illiana Christian) is seeded first in the 200 meter dash. Abbring is also part of a 4x400 relay team that is seeded first along with Laura Hamilton (Downers Grove, IL/Timothy Christian), Katie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian), and Lisa Winkle (Grand Rapids/South Christian).
Calvin has finished in the top ten at nationals on the women's side seven times in the last 10 years.

The Calvin men, who finished in 13th place last year, have one individual seeded first. Senior Matt Edwards (Grand Blanc/Grand Blanc) is seeded first in the 10,000 meter run as the Knights will have seven runners filling nine spots in four distance events. Calvin has finished in the top ten four times in the last five years and in the top 25 nine of the last ten years.
