CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY, MAY 12, 2004
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
A number of Calvin track and field athletes competed at the Aquinas Twilight Invitational on Wednesday at Houseman Field in Grand Rapids and a number of Calvin athletes performed extremely well.
Highlighting the afternoon for Calvin was the performance of sophomore Kim Vanderzee (Shoreline, WA) who matched one of the oldest records remaining in the Calvin record books as she won the high jump with a strong NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 5-7. Vanderzee's jump matched the Calvin record of 5-7 originally established by Christy Visser in 1991. Vanderzee was one of two individuals to post NCAA III provisional qualifying marks for the Knights in the high jump as freshman Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids Christian High School) took third with a provisional qualifying and season-best mark of 5-4 ½.
Field events were a strength for the Calvin women as senior Katie Corner (Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) took first in the discus with a throw of 160-3 while freshman Megan VanderVliet (Oakville, ON) took fourth with a career-best throw of 121-10.
In the shot put, junior Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Corner tied for second with strong NCAA III provisional qualifying marks of 44-5 with the throw by Corner a career-best in the event. VanderVliet was close behind with a career-best mark of 42-2 ¼, just two inches short of a provisional qualifying mark in her first-ever season of track and field competition.
In the pole vault, sophomore Missy Smith (Grand Rapids Christian HS) took second with a vault of 12-0 with freshman Valerie Thompson (Franklin, MA) taking eighth (10-0). In the javelin, sophomore Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) had a career-best throw of 122-10 that earned her second place.
The Calvin women also sparkled in the relays as the Knights posted a pair of strong NCAA III provisional qualifying times. In the 4x100 meter relay, the Calvin quartet of freshmen Meredith Homer (Charlton, MA) and Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS) and juniors Laura Hamilton (Downers Grove, IL) and Sue Abbring (Highland, IN) took second with a season-best time of 47.87. In the 4x400 meter relay, Hamilton, freshman Katie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian HS), Winkle and Abbring took first with a season-best time of 3:51.30.
Abbring also had a sizzling performance in the 400 meters, taking second with a strong NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 56.53 while Hamilton was superb in the 100 meter hurdles with a season-best time of 15.12 that was good for second place.
Another notable performance was turned in by sophomore Noell Berghuis (Unity Christian HS) who clocked in with a season-best time of 1:07.67 in taking sixth in the 400 meter hurdles.
In the men's competition, Calvin had several strong efforts, particularly in the 800 meters as the Knights went 2-3-4 with freshman Todd Schuster (Denver, CO) recording a season-best time of 1:55.37 to lead the way. He was followed by senior Joel Post (Highland, IN) in third (1:55.92) and junior Ben Dyke (Unity Christian HS) in fourth (1:56.64).
Another big effort was turned in by freshman Kyle Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) who placed fourth with a career-best throw of 140-9.
The action continues for a group of Calvin athletes Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Dr. Keeler Invitational hosted by North Central College in Naperville, Illinois.
