CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 27, 2004

SOFTBALL

BIG RAPIDS - Calvin suffered a pair of hard-luck losses on Tuesday as the
Knights dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at GLIAC foe Ferris
State University.

Ferris State (24-21-1) won both games in its final at bat, winning 6-5 in game
one and 4-3 in game two. Calvin held three-run leads in both games but could
not make either lead hold up.

In game one, Calvin led 3-0 through four innings but the Bulldogs scored two
in the fifth to creep to within one. The Knights added a run in the sixth but
Ferris State answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the
score. In the top of the seventh, Calvin took a 5-4 lead on a sacrifice fly by
sophomore Laurel Sands (Rockford HS). In the bottom of the seventh however,
Ferris State used three hits to score two runs and win the game. Junior Kara
VanKooten (Anchorage, AK) took the loss in relief of freshman starter Ruth Anna
Spooner (Twin Falls, ID) as VanKooten fell to 7-4 on the year.

Calvin collected 13 hits in defeat with five players notching multiple-hit
games. Juniors Angie Sietsema (Grandville HS) and Lea Bareman (Unity Christian
HS) both had two-hit games with each player collecting a double.

In game two, Calvin (19-15) jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind RBI hits from
freshman Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH), Rachel Dyksterhouse (Kalamazoo Christian HS)
and sophomore Jill Scholten (Holland Christian HS).

Ferris State got right back into the game on a three-run homer with two outs
in the bottom of the fourth however and then scored the game-winning run in the
bottom of the seventh on a bloop single to left with one out. Junior Rachelle
Heyboer (Fremont HS) took the loss to fall to 6-6 on the year. Three of the
runs allowed by Heyboer were unearned. Calvin outhit Ferris State in the loss
