CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28, 2004

BASEBALL

COMSTOCK PARK -- With a strong wind blowing to the outfield wall, Wednesday's
non-conference baseball game between Calvin and Aquinas at Fifth Third Ballpark
figured to be a high-scoring affair.

It was as the Saints (16-23) held off the Knights (12-21) 10-8 in a
non-conference game played at the home of the West Michigan Whitecaps.

Calvin jumped out to an early 4-1 lead with four runs in the top of the second,
only to see Aquinas collect six hits in a five-run uprising in the bottom half
of the inning that allowed the Saints to take a 6-4 lead. Aquinas would add
two runs in the third and two in the fourth to build a 10-4 lead before the
Knights struck back in the top of the seventh with a four-run rally. Senior
Terry O'Neal (Muskegon Reeths-Puffer HS) drove in senior Aaron Griffith
(Manhattan, KS) for Calvin's first run in the seventh and moments later,
sophomore Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO) crushed a mammath three-run homer over the
left field wall to cut the margin down to two runs. The home run by VanEps was
his fourth of the year and sailed over the picnic tables located on a patio
beyond the leftfield fence.

Junior Andy Bunting (Glen Lake HS) was then able to draw a two-out walk to
bring the tying run to the plate but Aquinas relief pitcher Jon Renbarger was
able to get out the small jam with a game-ending strikeout.

Sophomore Jory Trim (Grand Rapids Creston HS) took the loss for the Knights to
fall to 1-6 on the year. Trim went the first two innings and then gave way to
freshman Brian Vande Streek (Unity Christian HS) in the third. Vande Streek
was relieved by junior Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian HS) in the sixth with
Deters throwing a scoreless frame of relief.

Aquinas finished the game with 16 hits to the seven of Calvin. Six of the 16
Aquinas hits were of the extra-base variety. Calvin also collected three
extra-base hits as Bunting and sophomore Kyle Hollemans (East Kentwood HS) both
picked up doubles on the afternoon along the home run by VanEps. Senior
Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian HS) was the only Calvin player to notch a
multiple-hit game as he went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Calvin returns to action on Friday when it opens a three-game conference series
at home against Adrian in a game scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m..
