CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FRIDAY, APRIL 16, 2004

BASEBALL

Olivet * Calvin opened their three-game league series against the Olivet College Comets with a 9-5 defeat Friday evening. Calvin falls to 7-16 overall and 1-5 in the MIAA, while Olivet moves to 12-15 overall and 4-3 in league action.

Calvin opened the scoring in the fourth inning of play on a two-out rally when sophomore Mark Asma (Kalamazoo Christian) hit an RBI single to bring in the run of junior Josh Vriesman (Denver Christian) and senior Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) doubled to bring in senior Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian). Over the next three innings, Olivet scored nine runs to take a 9-2 lead. In the top of the seventh inning, the Knights scrambled for three runs, starting when Griffith drove in Asma. Sophomores Kyle Hollemans (East Kentwood) and Mark Tigchelaar (Grand Rapids Christian) each scored on Comet errors to round out the games scoring.

Sophomore Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian) started in tremendous fashion for the Knights, retiring the first nine batters and striking out seven. Deters picks up the loss for a 3-2 record on the season and finished with five and two-thirds innings at the mound, giving up seven hits, seven runs (four earned), and striking out ten. Freshman Brian VandeStreek (Unity Christian) relieved Deters and gave up four hits and two earned runs before giving the ball to sophomore Andy Draayer (Denver Christian), who pitched two and one-third innings, giving up one hit and one strikeout.

Griffith lead the offense with three hits and was helped out by Asma who added two. The Knights final line was five runs on nine hits, with one error and Olivet went nine runs on twelve hits with two errors.

Calvin will return to action tomorrow afternoon at Olivet College for a doubleheader to begin at 1:00 p.m.
