CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, APRIL 17, 2004

SOFTBALL

The Calvin softball team's quest for a league title continued on Saturday
afternoon as the Knights swept Albion College 4-3 and 5-3. With the pair of
wins the Knights stay in the thick of the MIAA title hunt with an 8-2 mark, a
win ahead of Alma College (7-2). Calvin has league double-headers with Hope
College (April 22) and Adrian College (April 24) left on the schedule. The
Knights have won four in a row and seven of their last nine games.

In game one the Knights erased a two-run deficit in their last at-bat to steal
a 4-3 decision. It was the third time this season that the Knights have won a
game in their last at-bat. After giving up a two-run triple in the top of the
seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie junior Laurel Sands (Rockford) drew a one-out
walk. Freshman Andrea Wagner (Unity Christian) reached on an error that moved
Sands to third. Wagner advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rachelle
Heyboer (Fremont). Now with two outs, Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH/Munroe Falls)
loaded the bases with a walk and everybody moved up a base after Jeanne Cole
(Mason County Eastern) singled through the right side to score a run.

Calvin junior Angie Sietsema (Grandville) brought the crowd at Calvin Field to
their feet as she dropped a single into right field, scoring two and ending the
game in dramatic fashion-a 4-3 win for the Knights.

The Knights scored four runs on six hits and were led by J. Cole, who went
2-for-4 from the plate and garnered an RBI. Sietsema notched two RBI's and
Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern) added one.

Heyboer earned the win to improve to 5-3 on the year. She gave up six hits,
walked four and struck out two.

In game two the Knights scored a run in the second and added two more in the
third inning as Sands collected a RBI double and Heyboer notched an RBI single
to give Calvin a 3-0 lead. A RBI single in the fourth by Rachel Dyksterhouse
(Kalamazoo Christian) gave the Knights a 4-0 lead before Albion struck for a
run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Albion would score two runs in the
sixth inning before Calvin freshman Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID/Idaho
School for the Deaf) entered in the seventh and earned the save, facing only
four batters.

Calvin junior Kara Van Kooten (Anchorage, AK/Grace Christian) notched the win
to improve to 6-3 on the season and 2-0 in the MIAA. She gave up five hits, one
earned run, walked three, and struck out two.

The Knights are scheduled to play three double-headers next week. On Tuesday
Calvin will play Saginaw Valley at 3:30 p.m. and on Thursday will take on Hope
College at 3:30 p.m. Saturday Calvin will travel to Adrian to round out its
MIAA season for a 1:00 p.m. match-up. On Tuesday, Thursday, and possibly
Saturday the Calvin College Sports Information Office will broadcast the
softball games via RealAudio. Check out www.calvin.edu/sports for all the

(Reeths-Puffer) added a sacrifice fly that scored a run to aid the Knights
effort.

themselves from the Knights. Sophomore Tim Stoeffler (St. Joseph/GR Community
