CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR THURSDAY, APRIL 15, 2004

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Grand Rapids - For just the fourth time in the last 23 years, Calvin defeated
Hope College in a conference dual match as the Knights topped the Flying
Dutch
5-4 Thursday evening. Calvin broke a streak of ten years without an MIAA
dual
match victory over the Dutch last year, and has now taken back-to-back
victories.

Hope lead after taking two of the three doubles matches to start the event,
but Calvin was able to capture four singles victories to round out the
evening.

Scoring singles points for the Knights were Rachel Pater (South Christian) at
No. 2 singles, Annie Huizenga (Unity Christian) at No. 3 singles, Kari
Lipinski
(Grand Rapids Baptist) at No. 5 singles and Kim Bosscher (Calvin Christian)
at
No. 6 singles. Scoring the lone point in doubles were Amy Zeilstra (Timothy
Christian) and Pater at No. 1 doubles.

Calvin now stands at 12-4 overall and 4-1 in the MIAA, closely trailing St.
Mary's in the MIAA league race.

BASEBALL

Grand Rapids - A picture perfect day for baseball provided an offensive
shootout at Calvin field.
Calvin suffered a non-conference defeat, 12-7 at the hands of Saginaw Valley
State University. The loss drops Calvin to 7-15 overall on the year; SVSU
improved to 20-17.

Calvin starting pitcher Ben Buikema (Lake Odessa/Lakewood) looked good in his
first two innings of work, setting down the first eight batters of the game.
SVSU came through with a two out rally in the third, scoring a run on an RBI
single by Ryo Tahana.
In the bottom of the third, Calvin took the lead on a two-run triple by Mark
Asma (Portage/Kalamazoo Christian) that scored Kyle Hollemans (East Kentwood)
and Mike Aggen (Evergreen, IL). SVSU would tie the score in the fourth and
go
ahead with a six run fifth inning. Andy Draayer (Denver, CO), Justin Roza
(Burlington, ON), and Joel Bont (Calvin Christian) all surrendered runs for
Calvin in the fifth inning. Draayer picked up the loss to drop his record to
0-3.

The Knights fought back with a four-run rally in the bottom of the fifth.
Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO) had an RBI double, then scored with Asma on Aaron
Griffith's (Manhattan, KS) two run single. The Knights pitching staff could
not keep SVSU off the scoreboard however, giving up four more runs in the top
of the sixth inning. Dean Thompson (Gladwin/Ogemaw Heights), Ross Dykstra
(Holland Christian), and Tim Stoeffler (GR Community College) pitched a
scoreless inning apiece in relief for the Knights. In the bottom of the
seventh, Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO) crushed a solo homerun, his third of the
year, to account for the rest of the scoring.

Calvin is back in action tomorrow at Olivet, the game is scheduled to start
at
4:00pm. There will be live updates provided online by the Sports Information
Department. Updates will be posted after each half inning, with scoring
summaries also provided. The same will be done for the doubleheader with
Olivet on Saturday.
