SOFTBALL
Calvin swept a non-conference doubleheader from visiting Tri-State University Wednesday afternoon by scores of 6-2 and 4-2. The Knights are now 14-10 on the season heading into a key conference doubleheader with Albion on Saturday.
Calvin won both games against Tri-State (11-15-2) in come-from-behind fashion. In game one, Calvin trailed 2-0 through three innings but the Knights rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth and scored four more in the bottom of the sixth to gain the win.
Junior Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont HS) helped her own cause by ripping a two-run two-out RBI double in the fourth to tie the score. In the sixth, Calvin used two hits and three Tri-State errors to score four runs. Sophomore Laurel Sands (Rockford HS) collected an RBI single for the Knights in the rally.
Heyboer (4-3) went the distance for the Knights, striking out four and walking one while scattering nine Tri-State hits. Calvin had six hits in the win with Sands collecting a pair.
In game two, Calvin again trailed 2-0 but rallied with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead. Junior Abby Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) led off the inning with her second triple of the year. Freshman Chandra Fynaardt (Pella, IA) was sent in to pinch-run for Konyndyk and was promptly sent home on an RBI single by junior Angie Sietsema (Grandville HS). Heyboer was then hit by a pitch and after a sacrifice bunt by freshman Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH), freshman Andrea Wagner (Unity Christian HS) ripped a clutch two-run RBI double into left-center to give the Knights a 3-2 lead. Sophomore Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern HS) then plated Wagner with a double down the left field line. The double was Cole's team-leading ninth extra-base hit of the season.
Junior Kara VanKooten (Anchorage, AK) allowed a one-out single in the seventh for the Knights but extinguished any comeback hopes for the visiting Thunder with a groundout and a game-ending strikeout.
VanKooten (5-3) went the distance for the Knights, striking out eight and walking just one while scattering six hits.
Calvin picked up nine hits with Wagner leading the attack as she went 3-for-3 at the plate while Cole went 2-for-2.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Albion at 1:00 p.m. in a conference twinbill at Calvin Field. The doubleheader will be broadcast via RealAudio on the Calvin web site at: www.Calvin.edu/sports with Ross Weener and Josh Miller calling all of the action.
