Calvin suffered a 4-3 non-conference defeat to non-conference rival Aquinas College Tuesday afternoon at Calvin Field. The Knights are now 7-14 on the season while Aquinas is 8-18.
Aquinas broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the fourth inning off of Calvin starter Jory Trim (Grand Rapids Creston HS) as the Saints collected five hits in the uprising. Calvin countered with a run in the bottom half of the inning as senior Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) delivered a two-out RBI triple to right-center to score senior Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian HS) who had singled with two outs.
Calvin added another run in the fifth as sophomore Tim Stoeffler (Ionia HS) scored on a two-out error after reaching base on an error and then stealing his seventh base of the year.
Calvin freshman Brian Vande Streek (Unity Christian HS) kept the Knights in the game with three innings of shutout relief with sophomore Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian HS) adding another inning of shutout ball in the eighth.
In the top of the ninth, Aquinas picked up an important insurance run on a Calvin error, a sacrifice bunt and a timely two-out RBI single by Chris Graczyk.
Calvin countered with a run in the bottom of the ninth as sophomore Mark Tigchelaar (Grand Rapids Christian HS) scored from second base on an error after originally reaching base after being hit by a pitch. With runners on first and third and two outs, Calvin senior Terry O'Neal smashed a shot into the hole between short and third but Aquinas shortstop Arik Schoenborn was able to glove the ball on a sliding defensive play and flip the ball to second in time for the game-ending force out.
Trim took the loss to fall to 0-5 on the year as he scattered 10 hits in four innings of work. Sophomore Andy Draayer (Denver, CO) also worked an inning of relief in the ninth.
Calvin and Aquinas will face each other again on Wednesday, April 28 at Fifth/Third Park at 3:30 p.m. followed by a junior varsity game at approximately 6:00 p.m.. Ticket prices are $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for students, seniors and Calvin faculty and staff (with a staff ID).
