Calvin split a non-conference doubleheader with cross-town rival Aquinas
Monday afternoon at Calvin Field to move to 12-10 on the year.
In the opener, Calvin recorded a 7-3 victory behind an eight-hit attack but
then saw the tables turned in game two as Aquinas collected 14 hits in a 7-0
win.
In game one, Calvin rode the right arm of junior pitcher Kara VanKooten
(Anchorage, AK) as she scattered 12 hits while striking out seven batters and
walking two as she improved to 4-3 on the season.
Calvin took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on a
two-run RBI single by junior Abby Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian HS).
Aquinas scored a run in the third but the Knights countered with a run in the
fourth on an RBI single by sophomore Jill Scholten (Holland Christian HS).
Calvin then picked up four insurance runs in the sixth, using two hits and a
pair of Aquinas errors.
Sophomore Laurel Sands (Rockford HS) picked up two of Calvin's eight hits
including a double in the sixth inning rally.
In game two, Aquinas (20-16) placed runners on base in every inning but one as
it scored two in the first, three in the third and one in the fourth and
fifth.
Calvin left nine runners on base and also had two runners thrown out at the
plate in the loss. Freshman Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID) took the loss
to fall to 5-3 on the year as she went the first four innings with junior
Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont HS) pitching the final three.
Calvin managed just four hits off of Aquinas pitcher Lorna Bratton with two of
the hits of the extra-base variety as Konyndyk and senior Rachel Dyksterhouse
(Kalamazoo Christian HS) had doubles.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts future MIAA member
Tri-State University in a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m..
