CALVIN SPORTS REPORT PART TWO FOR APRIL 10, 2004

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

EAST LANSING -- A group of Calvin throwers came up with a handful of remarkable
performances at the Spartan Open hosted by Michigan State University on
Saturday. Leading the way was Calvin senior Katie Corner of Grand Rapids
Catholic Central High School who shattered her own school record in the women's
discus competition with a first place and NCAA III automatic qualifying throw
of 159-7. Corner's throw is the top throw in NCAA III women's track and field
this spring. It also shattered her previous school record of 158-2. In
addition, her throw is the 11th-best throw all-time in NCAA III women's track
and field history.

In the women's shot put competition, Calvin junior Lisa Nanninga of Grand
Rapids Christian High School came up with the best performance of her life,
unleashing a career-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 43-7 3/4
that was good for second place. Corner was sixth in the event with a throw of
41-11 1/4.

In the women's hammer throw, Calvin senior Carrie Zatarga of Coopersville High
School was 13th with a throw of 132-10.

In the men's competition, Calvin sophomore Justin Grasmeyer (Norwalk, CA) took
third in the discus with a career-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying
throw of 157-11. Freshman Josh Meckes (Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) took 13th
with a throw of 123-1. Meckes also took eighth in the shot put with a throw of
44-9 3/4.

The full compliment of Calvin track and field athletes will return to action
next Wednesday when the Knights host Olivet and Hope in MIAA dual meets.

MEN'S GOLF

GRANVILLE, OH -- Calvin took 11th in a field of 16 teams at the two-day Ted
Barclay Invitational hosted by Denison University Friday and Saturday. The
Knights posted a two-day team total of 627 strokes, firing a team score of 322
on Friday and then coming back with a team score of 305 on Saturday. Calvin's
team score on Saturday was the third-best of any team at the invitational,
surpassed only by eventual tournament champion Ohio Wesleyan which fired
back-to-back totals of 300 for a two-day team score of 600 and second place
Denison which posted scores of 304 on both days for a final tournament total of
608 strokes.

Junior Ricky Shilts (Kalamazoo Central HS) led the Knights with rounds of 76
and 74 to finish eighth in the final tournament standings with a two-day total
of 150 strokes. Junior Mike Bratt (Lynden, WA) was next at 156 (81-75) follwed
by senior Matt Kelly (Western Michigan Christian HS) in 57th at 162 (84-78).
Rounding out Calvin's finishers were freshman Jeff TenBrink (Kalamazoo
Christian HS) in 61st place (81-82) with a score of 163 and senior Phil Rietema
(Grand Rapids Baptist HS) who was 68th with a total of 164 strokes (86-78).

Chad Poling of Ohio Wesleyan was the tournament medalist, finishing with a
tournament total of 145 strokes. Poling had been tied with Andy VanHorn of the
College of Wooster after 36 holes of golf but then defeated VanHorn in a
playoff.
