ANGOLA, IN * Calvin's (5-13) bats rang louder than the Thunder of Tri-State University (10-15) as the Knights broke out of a six-game losing streak by scoring in seven of the nine innings. The 17-6 victory included a seven-run ninth inning for the Knights, an inning that saw ten runs scored between the two teams.
Calvin struck in the top of the first inning when senior Terry O'Neal (Reeths-Puffer) scored on a single by senior Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian). Senior Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) stepped to the plate next and poked a two-rbi triple. Tri-State scored their only run of the first inning on a double-steal with two outs registered. In the second inning, O'Neal drove home the only run in sophomore Tim Stoeffler (GR Community College) to push the lead to 4-1. Junior Josh Vriesman (Denver Christian) smacked a lead-off home run to start the third inning, while Tri-State snuck a runner home in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 5-2. Calvin worked a two-out rally to score three runs in the fourth. Sophomore Mike Aggen (Evergreen Park Community) scored from second on an error by the catcher, then sophomore Tyler Van Eps (Denver Christian) rung up a two-run homer, the second long ball of the game for the Knights. 8-3 deficit. In the sixth inning, Stoeffler scored on a Van Eps single with the bases loaded. Heuker went yard in the seventh, which halted the scoring for an inning and a half before the grand finale. In the ninth inning, Calvin's first three batters loaded the bases for junior Andy Bunting (Glen Lake) who reached on an error, scoring Vriesman and leaving the bases loaded for sophomore Kyle Hollemans (East Kentwood). Hollemans then rocked his second home-run of the season, this one being a grand-slam. After an out was finally recorded, Aggen doubled and was brought home on a double by O'Neal. Vriesman then doubled with two-outs, scoring O'Neal and the seventh run of the inning. Tri-State mustered up two runs on passed balls and another on an rbi single to finish the ninth inning fireworks.
Calvin starting pitcher, sophomore Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian) pushed his collegiate career record to 16-3 overall and 3-1 on the year. Deters pitched seven innings and gave up three runs on five hits. He struck-out five and walked one. Deters was replaced for the eighth inning by freshman Brian VandeStreek (Unity Christian) who faced four batters and gave up no hits. Senior Dean Thompson (Ogemaw Heights) pitched the ninth inning, allowing three runs on two hits.
Vriesman lead the Knights in offense with four hits in six at bats, while Aggen hit three in five at bats. Scoring three runs for the Knights were O'Neal, Vriesman, and Heuker. Hollemans collected four runs batted in, while Van Eps drove in three to push his team lead to 16 rbi's on the season.
Calvin will again battle the Thunder tomorrow with a twinbill set for 1:00 p.m. EST.
