Olivet * Calvin (7-6, 3-0 MIAA) stayed undefeated in the MIAA with a doubleheader sweep over the Olivet College Comets (6-9, 1-4 MIAA). The Knights had to rally for three runs in the top of the sixth to pull out a 4-3 win in game one, while they scored six in the second inning of game two to win 8-2.

Calvin opened the two-game series with a run in the first inning when lead-off batter Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern) doubled and scored off two errors. Olivet took the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the third when two runners crossed the plate. The Comets added another in the fifth to go up 3-1. The Knights retaliated with three runs in the sixth as senior Rachel Dyksterhouse (Kalamazoo Christian) and sophomore Laurel Sands (Rockford) singled, followed by a walk for junior Abby Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian). All three reached home before the side was retired.

Junior Rachelle Heyboer (Freemont) picked up the win to move to 2-2 on the season. Heyboer went all seven innings, giving up three runs on eight hits. She acquired two strikeouts and walked five batters.

J. Cole and Sands picked up two hits each with Dyksterhouse, Konyndyk and junior Lea Bareman (Unity Christian) adding one each.

In game two, Calvin utilized the strong bats of five hits and poor Comet fielding with four errors to blow up for six runs in the second inning. Senior Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern) acquired two hits and an RBI in the second inning alone. Also adding hits in the second were junior Angie Sietsema (Grandville), J. Cole, and Bareman. Olivet scored two in the fourth, but Calvin matched them in the fifth for a final score of 8-2.

J. Cole, Bareman, and K. Cole had two hits a piece, while Sietsema, Dyksterhouse, and Sands each had one. Sands also drove in two runs.

Junior Kara Van Kooten (Grace Christian School) upped her record to 3-3 on the year in the complete game victory. Van Kooten gave up two runs on four hits, striking out five and walking five.

Calvin plays Cornerstone at Grand Rapids Baptist High School this Monday with the first pitch set for 3:30 p.m.

BASEBALL

For the second consecutive year, Calvin was swept by rival Hope as the Flying Dutchmen completed a three-game series sweep over the Knights with 2-1 and 6-1 victories Saturday afternoon.

Over the course of the three-game series, Calvin (4-12 overall, 1-3 MIAA) batted just .186 against the Hope pitching staff with the Knights scoring just two runs over the weekend.

In Saturday's opener, Hope (13-9 overall, 4-2 MIAA) handed Calvin junior Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian HS) his first MIAA pitching defeat as the Flying Dutchmen pulled out a 2-1 victory in 10 innings. Scheduled for seven innings, Calvin sent the game into extra-innings with a rally in the bottom of the seventh as senior Terry O'Neal (Muskegon Reeths-Puffer HS) led off with a single and scored on a one-out triple to right-center by sophomore Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO). With VanEps on third base and only one out, Calvin had a golden opportunity to win the game but Hope starter Jon Deming bore down to shut down the threat with a strikeout and groundout.

Calvin placed runners in scoring position in each of the next three innings but could not come up with the clutch hit. Meanwhile, Hope broke through for a run in the top of the 10th as freshman Mike VanderVelde led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a two-out double to the leftfield wall by Colin Fry.

In the bottom half of the 10th, Calvin sophomore Tim Stoeffler (Ionia HS) reached base on a one-out single and then stole second but Hope relief pitcher Mike Rodgers followed with back-to-back strikeouts to preserve the win for Deming (5-0).

Hope scored its first run in the top of the second as catcher Eric MacKenzie scored from third on a Calvin error.

Deters (2-1) struck out nine batters without a walk in 10 innings of work while scattering eight hits. Deming scattered four hits in nine innings of work while striking out 10 and walking three.

In game two, Hope jumped out in front 4-0 with three runs in the top of the first and one in the second. Trailing 5-0 in the fourth, Calvin picked up its only run of the game on a long home run to left into the wind by senior Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian HS).

Hope finished with nine hits while Calvin had seven. Three of Calvin's seven hits were of the extra-base variety but the Knights stranded six runners and also committed four errors.

Over its last five games, Calvin has committed 18 errors.

Freshman Ross Dykstra (Holland Christian HS) took the loss in three innings of work to fall to 1-1 on the year. Freshman Brian Vande Streek (Unity Christian HS) came on in relief and allowed just one run (unearned) in four innings of work. Hope senior Andrew Vlasak (2-2) picked up the complete-game victory, striking out eight batters and walking just one.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Grand Valley State at 4:00 p.m..
