CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 2, 2004
BASEBALL
For the second straight year, Calvin opened a three-game series with rival
Hope with a mercy-rule defeat as the Knights fell 10-0 Friday afternoon in a
game shortened to eight innings because of the 10-run rule.
On offense, Calvin was stymied by Hope senior southpaw Kenny Bart (2-3) who
held the Knights to just four hits while striking out five batters. Bart did
walk four Calvin batters but also picked up a pair of base runners.
On defense, Calvin committed six errors which led to five unearned runs for
the Flying Dutchmen (11-9 overall, 2-2 MIAA). Hope also collected 12 hits off
the Calvin pitching staff including a pair of extra-base hits.
Calvin (4-10 overall, 1-2 MIAA) fell behind 6-0 early on as Hope picked up six
runs in the top of the second, using a hit batter, six base hits and two Knight
errors.
Hope would later add single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and eighth
innings.
Picking up hits for the Knights were senior Terry O'Neal (Muskegon
Reeths-Puffer HS), junior Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO), sophomore Mark Tigchelaar
(Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Jon Henderson (Grand Rapids Ottawa
Hills HS).
Sophomore Andy Draayer (Denver, CO) took the pitching defeat for the Knights
to fall to 0-2 on the year. Draayer went the first three innings with
sophomore Tim Stoeffler (Ionia HS) throwing the final five innings for Calvin.
Over the last 11 years, Hope has won 16 of its 31 meetings against Calvin as
the two rivals had been 15-15 during the previous 10 years heading into
Friday.
The three-game series is scheduled to conclude tomorrow with a pair of
seven-inning games with game one slated to start at 1:00 p.m..
