CALVIN WEEKEND SPORTS WRAP-UP FOR MARCH 26-27, 2004
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
ATLANTA, GA * The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams concluded a week of training down south with strong performances at the Emory Classic held at Georgia Tech University this past weekend. In the men's competition, Calvin took first place in a field of 29 teams with 85.5 points, eight points ahead of host Emory. In the women's competition, Calvin took second in a field of 25 teams with 147 points, finishing just eight points behind Division I institution Georgia State University.
In the women's meet, Calvin produced four first place finishes and nine NCAA III provisional qualifying performances.
Calvin's first place finishes included senior Katie Corner (Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) in the discus (150-11, NCAA III provisional), sophomore Missy Smith (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the pole vault (10-11-3/4), senior Jessie Lair (Southfield Christian HS) in the 10,000 meters (37:54.22) and senior Sarah Hastings (Traverse City Central HS) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:17.63, NCAA III provisional).
Other NCAA III provisional qualifying performances came from Calvin's 4x100 meter relay team (48.92, 3rd place), Corner and junior Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the shot put with Corner taking second (42-9 ¾) and Nanninga third (42-7 ½), junior Laura Hamilton (Downers Grove, IL) in the 400 meter hurdles (1:03.65, 2nd place), junior Sue Abbring (Highland, IN) in the 100 meters (12.30, 2nd place) and 200 meters (24.99, 2nd place) and sophomore Kim VanderZee (Shoreline, WA) in the high jump (5-5 ¾, 2nd place).
Other notable performances included:
*Sophomore Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) second in the 800 meters (2:19.45)
*Senior Jodi VerMeulen (Holland Christian HS) second in the 1,500 meters (4:51.06)
*Sophomore Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) sixth in the javelin (104-3) and seventh in the 100 meter hurdle (15.98)
*Vanderzee third in the triple jump (33-3 ¾)
*Senior Carrie Zatarga (Coopersville HS) third in the hammer throw (128-3)
*Freshman Melissa VandenBerg (Grand Rapids Christian HS) sixth in the 10,000 meters ( 42:04)
*Freshman Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE) fifth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (12:21.79)
*Freshman Bethany Hofman (Holland Christian HS) eighth in the 1,500 meters (4:59.59)
*Freshman Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA) sixth in the 100 meter hurdles (15.93)
*Freshman Kate VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian HS) ninth in the 400 meters (59.76)
In the men's competition, Calvin picked up four first place finishes as senior David Haagsma (South Christian HS) won the 5,000 meters (14:50.88), senior Tim Avery (Rochester, NY) won the 10,000 meters with a career-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 30:56.24, junior Andy Yazzie (Rehobath, NM) won the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:25.13) and freshman Josh Meckes (Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) won the shot put (47-1).
Yazzie's win the steeplechase was part of a 1-2-3-6 Calvin finish as sophomore Harrison Jorritsma (Beamsville, ON) was second (9:30.88, career-best), junior Aaron Iverson (Radnor, OH) was third (9:43.61, career-best) and senior Kyle Carrick (Tokyo, Japan) sixth (9:55.06).
Senior Matt Edwards (Grand Blanc HS) had a good run in the 10,000 meters, recording a third place time of 31:56.20.
Junior Reuben Sportel (South Christian HS) also had a pair of strong performances, finishing fourth in the 110 high hurdles (15.58) and eighth in the 400 meter hurdles (56.50).
In the discus, Meckes took fifth (130-8) and freshman Kyle Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) eighth (125-3). Sophomore Jason Koning (South Christian HS) was fifth in the pole vault (13-5 ¼) while junior Jeff Engbers (Whitsinville, MA) was seventh in the 1,500 meters (3:58.38).
Sophomore Tim Zwiers (Pella, IA) was also strong in the triple jump as he took eighth in the event with a career-best mark of 42-9 1/2.
In the high jump, junior Jeremy Knoester (Grand Rapids Christian HS) took fourth (6-3 ½) while sophomore Chris Becker (Reading, PA) was seventh (6-1 ½).
