Calvin 29th in Latest United States Sports Academy Director's Cup Standings
Calvin College continues to rank among the nation's leaders in the annual
Director's Cup chase. Sponsored this year by the United States Sports
Academy, the Director's Cup competition is held at the NCAA I, II and III
levels as well as for NAIA schools. The standings are based on points earned
by teams that compete in NCAA and NAIA Championship events and is presented
annually by the National Association of Collegiate Director's of Athletics
(NACDA) to the best overall collegiate athletics program in the country.
After the recently completed winter sports season, Calvin is 29th with a total
of 252 points. The winter sports standings include the sports of men's and
women's basketball, skiing, wrestling, men's and women's swimming and
diving and men's and women's indoor track and field.
Calvin was able to add to its point total on the performance of its men's
basketball and men's and women's swimming and diving teams this winter.
All three teams participated in NCAA III post-season play with the men's
basketball team earning 25 points, its women's swimming and diving team
collecting 50 points and its men's swimming and diving team receiving 33.5
points.
This fall, Calvin s cross country teams both scored in the Director's Cup
standings as the men's cross country team captured its second national
championship to earn 100 Director's Cup points while the women's cross
country team tied for 14th to earn 43.5 points.
Defending Director's Cup champion Williams of Massachusetts continues to
lead the standings as the Ephs have a total of 821.25 points and hold a 91.25
point lead over second place Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Last year, Calvin finished 22nd in the final Director's Cup standings with
403.75 to finish in the top 25 for the eighth consecutive year.
Since the Director's Cup was initiated at the NCAA Division III level for
the 1995-96 academic year, Calvin is one of only nine schools to finish in the
top-25 all eight previous years. Joining Calvin in the group are Williams,
College of New Jersey, Amherst (MA), Middlebury (VT), Ithaca (NY),
Wisconsin-LaCrosse, SUNY-Cortland and Emory (Ga.).
