CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 23, 2004 (Part One)
BASEBALL
FORT MYERS, FL * Since a season-opening 2-0 win over Otterbein on March 20, Calvin has suffered four straight defeats including a pair to nationally-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater on Tuesday as the Knights were defeated by scores of 4-0 and 24-2. On Monday, Calvin dropped a 5-4 decision to Lawrence University and a 15-5 defeat to Shawnee State University.
The following are brief recaps of each game.
March 22 Games
Lawrence 5, Calvin 4
A strong pitching performance by freshman Ross Dykstra was ruined by a late-inning comeback by Lawrence University. A graduate of Holland Christian High School, the 6-4 Dykstra allowed just two runs in six innings of work and departed the game with a 4-2 lead. Calvin senior tri-captain Dean Thompson (Ogemaw Heights HS) entered in the top of the seventh in an attempt to close out the game but could not do so as Lawrence rallied for three runs. A two-out error allowed two Lawrence runners to score to tie the game and a run-scoring single moments later gave Lawrence the lead.
Calvin would not score in the bottom half of the seventh as the Knights were retired in order. Junior Andy Bunting (Glenn Lake) and sophomore Kyle Holleman (East Kentwood HS) picked up two hits apiece for the Knights. Dykstra struck out two and walked two in six innings of work while Thompson (0-1) suffered the defeat.
Shawnee State 15, Calvin 5
A late-game outburst allowed Shawnee State (OH) to collect a lop-sided 15-5 victory over the Knights. Calvin led 1-0 through four innings but Shawnee State scored five runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to blow the game open.
Shawnee State collected 18 hits off of four Calvin pitchers while the Knights had 10 hits of their own. Junior Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO) led the Knights with three hits in four trips to the plate while senior Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) and sophomore Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO) had two hits apiece with Griffith stroking his third collegiate home run.
Sophomore Tim Stoeffler (Ionia HS) suffered the loss as he departed after 4.1 innings of work.
