CALVIN WEEKEND SPORTS WRAP-UP FOR MARCH 19, 2004

BASEBALL

FORT MYERS, FL * After nearly a year away from the collegiate pitching mound, Calvin College junior Jim Deters showed no signs of rust. A year ago, Deters missed the bulk of the 2003 season with a back injury but on Saturday night, he made a return to the mound with a flourish.

A graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Deters fired his 4th collegiate shutout in leading Calvin to a 2-0 victory over Otterbein College in the season opener for the Knights. A 6-4 right hander, Deters is now 14-2 in his collegiate career. Saturday night's victory also marked his 14th complete game at the collegiate level.

Playing under the lights Saturday night in south Florida, Deters was masterful against an Otterbein team that had advanced to the 2003 NCAA III Tournament as he allowed just three hits while striking out eight and walking just one.

Deters was nearly matched by Ottterbein senior lefty Adam Brandt who struck out 10 of the first 12 Calvin batters he faced. Calvin struck for its first run in the third inning however and added an insurance marker in the fifth.

Sophomore Tim Stoeffler (Ionia HS) a transfer from Grand Rapids Community College, scored both of Calvin's runs. Three of Calvin's five hits were of the extra-base variety as senior Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian HS) belted a triple with senior Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) and sophomore Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO) collecting doubles.

Calvin returns to action on Monday when it faces Lawrence University at noon and Shawnee College at 3:00 p.m..

Calvin will also face Otterbein again on Friday at 3:00 p.m..
