NCAA III MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
ST. PETERS, MO * Calvin finished 40th at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships with a team score of 14 points. Calvin junior Peter Boumgarden of Naperville, Illinois accounted for all 14 of Calvin's points at the national meet with a 15th place finish in the 200 IM Thursday and a 7th place finish in the 100 butterfly Friday.
On Saturday, Boumgarden took 19th in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:53.76 which did not advance him into Saturday night's finals.
Calvin was one of four MIAA schools to place at the national meet with Kalamazoo leading the way, finishing 11th with 96 points, Hope 16th with 75 points, Calvin 40th and Albion 42nd with 10 points.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
MOBILE, AL * The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams opened their outdoor campaigns at the Jaguar Invitational hosted by the University of South Alabama on Saturday and a number of Calvin individuals turned in strong performances.
In the women's competition, Calvin senior Katie Corner of Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School won the shot put (12.94 meters) and discus (45.73 meters) with her throw in the discus a strong NCAA III provisional qualifying performance. Also taking first place for the Calvin women in the competition were sophomore Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) in the javelin (117-2) and senior Carrie Zatarga (Coopersville HS) in the hammer throw (41.1 meters).
Another standout performance was turned in by freshman Lauren Colyn (Kalamazoo Christian HS) in the high jump as she posted an NCAA III provisional qualifying performance of 1.68 meters in taking second in the high jump. Junior Sue Abbring (Highland, IN) also had an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 24.96 in taking third in the 200 meters while just missing a provisional qualifying mark in taking third in the 100 meters in 12.36. Calvin's final NCAA III provisional qualifying performance came from sophomore Missy Smith (Grand Rapids Christian HS) as she took third in the pole vault with a mark of 11-6. Junior Laura Hamilton (Downers Grove, IL) also had a fine performance in taking third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.15.
Second place finishes from Calvin included junior Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the shot put (12.48 meters) and senior Jessie Lair (Southfield Christian HS) in the 3,000 meter run (10.29.78).
In the men's competition, Calvin received a pair of victories from freshman Josh Meckes (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) as he won the shot put (13.9 meters) and discus (40.42 meters). Calvin also received NCAA III provisional qualifying performances from senior Kris Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 5,000 meters (14:49.07) and junior Andy Yazzie (Rehoboth, NM) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:22.73). Yazzie's time in the steeplechase was good for first place.
Junior Chris Friebel (Shelby, OH) also had a big day as he posted strong times in the 100 and 200 meters, clocking in at 10.91 in the 100 and 22.14 in the 200. His time in the 100 meters was a career-best.
Both Calvin track and field teams will now spend a week training in Gulf Shores, Alabama and will conclude their spring break trip next Saturday when they compete at the Emory Springtime Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia.
