CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 12, 2004

NCAA III WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

ST. PETERS, MO * The second day of competition brought a second All-America berth for Calvin freshman Rebekah Weima Friday night at the NCAA III Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the St. Peters Rec Plex.

A graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Weima took national runner-up honors in the 200 freestyle Friday night with a time of 1:51.58. Kenyon senior Agnese Ozolina * the 2003 national runner-up in the event took first place with a time of 1:50.05.

Weima's finish is the best-ever national finish by a member of the Calvin women's swimming and diving team. In Friday's prelims, Weima blasted through the water with a school record time of 1:50.86 * her second school record in as many days. On Thursday, Weima established a school record in the 500 freestyle and later earned NCAA III All-America honors with a sixth place finish.

"Rebekah gave a great run for it (first place) tonight," said Calvin swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "I'm extremely proud of her effort and performance. A second place finish for a freshman is pretty remarkable."

Weima will also compete in the 100 freestyle Saturday where she is seeded second. Also competing for Calvin on Friday was sophomore Abby Johnson of Grand Haven High School in the 400 IM. Johnson just missed a spot in Friday's consolation finals (places 9-16) as she finished 17th in the morning prelims with a time of 4:39.03.

Johnson is scheduled to compete in the 200 butterfly on Saturday where she is seeded 18th. Calvin senior Sara TerHaar (Bradenton, FL) will also compete on the three-meter diving board on Saturday.

Heading into the final day of competition, Calvin sits in a tie for 23rd place with a team score of 30 points.
